SUNY Purchase for Psych... or Look elsewhere?

I am currently finishing up my associates degree at my community college on Long Island. My current GPA is 3.5 and I’m part of an Honor’s society. Psychology is my major and a topic I care about very much. Is it worth it to go to SUNY Purchase because I’m attracted to the campus life (dorms), diversity, low cost, and small class sizes? In other words, how are the academics for people that aren’t art majors at Purchase? Are there any other SUNY schools that I should be looking at that offer a good balance of academics and campus life for a low cost? Thanks in advance!

I am sure that you want to get off Long Island (I am ready to retire and can’t wait to get off the Island myself) but for psych, Stony Brook is much stronger than Purchase. Since both are SUNY schools, the cost should be almost equivalent.

Disclosure: My H was a psych major at SBU and, like you, transferred from a community college.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info! I’m actually in a dual enrollment program for Stonybrook admission but am unsure if I’d like to attend because of the large classes and campus size. I also read that the campus life isn’t too interesting considering it’s mainly a commuter school.

Have you considered New Paltz? Or try Geneseo or Oneonta–both good liberal arts colleges in the SUNY system.
