My son finally heard from Suny Purchase. They heard his prescreening CD and invited him to audition in March. Has any other jazz instrument heard from Suny or the other Conservatories that required a prescreening CD?

congratulations and good luck to your son! I have heard really wonderful things about the jazz program at SUNY Purchase. keeping fingers crossed for him....

(and welcome to the CC Music Board!)

Thanks! and thanks for the welcome! CC is a great resouce! I'm so happy there is a place on CC for parents of musicians!

my son did not get an invite to audition - -very disappointed though he did not think he would get into the school - - todd did send an email telling us that he had 30 drummers send cds from all over the world and is probably only taking 3 - -the joys of being a drummer....luckily he applied to many places.

And not many jazz guitarists openings either ! My freind's S who is is very good and at a magnet Performing Arts school was not invited to audition either .

Yes, I know - the saying is that the only thing there are more of than drummers is guitarists. I guess it is a dash of reality. Where is your friend's son leaning towards?

I gather in performance for guitar . He did not apply to Crane ( they do not have a lot of jazz ??) but is it Stonybrook ( ?) and Fredonia . He also auditioned for Ithaca and Temple and UPitts.

My son did get an audition for jazz piano (its this Saturday). We just came back from visiting Berklee where he got in early action (doesn't have to make a final commitment to May) and know that guitarists and drummers make up the bulk of the class there.

My son auditioned at Purchase this weekend on bass. I don’t know if this makes you feel better or worse, but Todd Coolman, the head of the program, told my son he had an amazing class of drummer applicants and that he didn’t have any idea how he’d choose from them. So, your son shouldn’t feel too bad, but I guess that’s kind of scary for the rest of the process. Good luck!
