@shanniebannie Thanks so much! This may sound totally weird and I am embarrassed that I don’t know. Do they take classes such as math, English, history, etc… you know the ones we took when we went to college?
@birdie13 No need to feel embarrassed! Dancers can choose whatever academic courses they want (depending on their interests) that are offered in the Purchase course catalog (which is online) AND don’t conflict with the Dance major requirements. At Purchase, there’s no requirement to take English, math, history, specifically. There is only the requirement that you select some academic courses outside of your performing arts major. I mean, that’s the whole point of studying music, theater or dance in a conservatory environment, right? You are focused on your chosen discipline. My DD is overjoyed that she does not have to sit through another math class. LOL I hope that helps.
@shanniebannie do dancers audition for the Purchase Dance Company every year or just once and then they’re in for the duration? How does that work?
@Undercovermom1 I believe dancers audition every year for the Purchase Dance Company because when outside choreographers come, they sit in on these auditions and select the dancers they want for their pieces. Not everyone in the Dance Department is selected every semester, but the degree does require six credits of the Purchase Dance Company to graduate. Unlike other conservatory programs that make dancers wait until their junior year to dance in their companies, the Purchase freshmen that arrive in August are thrown right into auditions with the underclassmen! No pressure, right?
Here’s an old article about the experiences offered in the Purchase Dance Company:

@shanniebannie thank you!
Anyone know how many incoming freshman there are in the dance major?
