SUNY Questions

Hey all. I've been out of school for a few years but am going back. I was wondering if anyone knew how tuff it was to get into SUNY at albany. I have looked around a lot and don't know what type of grades it takes to get in. I am trying to transfer with 57 credits from the University of New Haven where I had a 2.7 gpa. Obviously not that good, that's why I was wondering what type of school SUNY was.

Hi! D was accepted to SUNY Albany as a freshmen with 89 average (3.4GPA??) and ACT of 23 which is about 1070SAT. I was very pleased she was accepted with those stats as she was certainly not a shoo- in. I've been on their site several times as we will be visiting the campus again in March. They do info sessions and tours for Transfer students on Tues and Fri at 1:00PM. The also suggest you bring your transcript. So if you are serious about SUNY Albany, you may want to go to one of the Transfer sessions. If you are interested in attending a SUNY, you may want to get the SUNY Viewbook and see if there is another SUNY school which may meet your needs better. My d was also accepted to SUNY Cortland, Oneonta, Brockport (and a little surprising) U of Buffalo with her stats. I graduated SUNY Oswego. So depending on your interests and major, there may be a SUNY that is better suited for you. Good luck.

the suny schools aren't that hard to get into.

except Geneseo !

Hi Easydoesitmom- just "saw" you on the GMU/Towson thread. Since you are interested in SUNY- I thought it more appropriate to address any questions here. We're actually doing our Suny tour this week-end. & Cloaker- if you're still interested in Albany, there is an Open House on 4/1. The Suny's all have different characteristics. ie- Stony Brook is more science oriented- Purchase is geared towards performing arts and creative writing- Buffalo has a nursing program and is probably closest to the "big U" feel. so easydoesit- if you let me know what your kid is looking for, I can maybe point you in the right direction. But if you can get a hold of the SUNY viewbook, it should give you a good overview of the different programs.
And easydoesit- I am assuming you are not from NYS- Most of my friends are SUNY and CUNY graduates- Not one person can understand how SUNY Geneseo became so popular and difficult to get it. It's reputation was always in line with Oswego-Oneonta-etc. It is a MYSTERY to all concerned as to how Geneseo gained this reputation. So if anyone knows, please share.

I'm also attending UA - not the best challenge academically for me, but EXCELLENT financially. They also have an accepted student open house on 4/22 if you missed the last one. Don't get discouraged by the campus!!!! - I know it's pretty grey right now but it gets VERY beautiful come spring/summer time.

Check out Oswego in mid/late summer. The campus is one of the most goregous campuses in the country. Caveat: You pay for it in the winter though. The best way to deal with that is to go to the Woodshed tavern and drink-a lot ;)As far as Geneseo goes, my organic chem prof when I was at Oswego said that the Geneseo administration made a decision to increase academic standards at the expense of expanding student body growth. It is funny, one of my good friends in college was accepted to Cornell and rejected flat out by Geneseo. I don't think that they are quite as selective now as they were in 1989.

it's because Geneseo has the coolest name

If you're going to check out Oswego, go in the fall, in the beginning of October. The trees are gorgeous. However...it's a hole in the wall town.

Some of the best schools in the country are in hole in the wall towns. Ever seen Hamilton College or Colgate?
