SUNY-Rescind Acceptance?

My son was accepted to one of the SUNYs, not Binghamton or Geneseo, from the wait list but, is struggling with a class which may require attending summer school unless he miraculously passes the regents.

I'm wondering if they're likely to rescind his admission if he attends summer school? His overall GPA is 2.9-3.0, mid 1100/1600 SAT.

Anyone have any firsthand experience with this type of issue?

Did you speak with son’s HS guidance counselor? I’m sure this is not the first time they had to deal with this issue. As a SUNY mom, my educated GUESS is that as long as they received their HS diploma before the semester begins, they should be OK- but my guess is based on common sense and not fact.
I’ll look at SUNY website and see if I can find anything. But I’d check with Guidance Dept at your kids school.
Good Luck!

I’m not “sold” on his GC’s advice. We declined her advice on schools to apply in favor of our own research and he was admitted to every school we applied to and waitlisted, ultimately accepted to all 8 schools.

stage- I can understand your relunctance but you need solid info. I checked SUNY site- I didn’t see anything specific on the matter. Now this is all a blur ro me as kid already graduated college-
but even if son fails 1 Regent, will he be eligible to graduate?? I know there was a distinction between Regents diploma and non-regents- but again I don’t know if those distinctions exist anymore. Maybe the State Education Dept. website has info.
Also is the Regents in English (which I think he may have to pass to graduate) ??or is it in a 1 year “elective” class . That may make a difference- so you might want to share that info with other NY parents who read these boards.
hopefully someone here will come through for you. Or better yet, maybe your kid will pass the Regents.

it’s a science course but, he already has what he needs. Extra course. Not sure if he needs to pass the regents for this since he already has what is required

OK- I just googled NYS Regents requirements and it brought me to NYState Higher Ed. Services Corp [NYS Higher Education Services Corporation - We Help People Pay for College](http://www.HESC.com)
there was info on Required Regents which included : English-Algebra-Global History-US History and Science.
Please use this info as a starting point only. But maybe there is additional info on that site which would be helpful!!

ok I just tried the link- it just brings you to main page. When I did a google search on NYS Regent requirements, it brought me to the right page. So hopefully you can find the specific info on the HESC site. I did see a page Re: Regents requirments for graduation.

The problem with attending summer school, especially if he attends summer school in NYC is that regents is given August 17 & August 18th with rating day on August 19th. If he attends school in NYC, the information will not feed from ATS to STARS (which is the mechanism used to place grades on the transcript until approx August 24/25.

Schools are closed after rating day and the following week as principals and administrators return to school the last week in august (~ August 29). Your child will most likely not be certified as a graduate and given a diploma until after his college start date. This means that he may not be able to register for classes because he has not successfully completed high school. The school can decide to rescind the admission.

The bigger issue is what happens if he does not pass the august regents? Just this week the Regents passed the vote that there will no longer be a January regents. If your son does not pass in June or at the latest August, he will not be able to graduate until June 2012.

add:

In order to meet the graduation requirement, your son will have to pass regents based life science + labs that culminate in a regen(living environment) and one regents based physical science + labs (earth science, chemistry or physics). While your son may have passed one science regents, he must pass the course and the lab requirements (even if he does not pass the second regents). For example : let’s say your son has taken living environment and passed the regents, marine biology and regents chemistry. Your son will have to pass chem and the labs even if he fails the regents in order to graduate. Should your son not meet the lab requirement, he would not graduate. The only way to be asssured that your son has what he needs is if he has already passed a three year sequence of regents science along with the labs.

My advice is that your son get on his grind and do whatever he needs to do, tutoring, studying , eat and sleep the regents so that he can graduate in June and be assured his spot in the fall.

my guess is that if he already passed one science course then he is OK- but hopefully you can get a definitive answer from the website. (I’m glad it wasn’t English- cause even back in the day when I took Regents that was a MUST PASS Regent.)

Sybbie made a great point. The August Regent may be too late for consideration. But as he already passed one science Regent, maybe he has met the requirement ??

Sybbie,

Nose to the grindstone? From your lips, to Gods’ ears!

He does not need this to complete his science requirements for a regents diploma. My concern is an F or incomplete and summer school.

He has passed 3 science regents, this is a fourth

As long as he has all of his credits, he will graduate and get a diploma because you only need 6 science credits to graduate and he has achieved that.

However, if he gets an F or incomplete, there is a great possiblity that his admission could be rescinded becasue there is an expectation that he finishes school with the same grades that he had when they accepted him. While if he had bit of a slide, they would give him wink, but failing a course is another issue. They also could let him start on academic probation, which would be worse and he would have to report it going to grad/professional school :(

That’s pretty interesting since I inquired specifically about SUNYs because his high-reach private school said, don’t worry, he has the sciences he needs already and as long as he goes to summer school(if necessary) they won’t rescind his acceptance.

the site I sent along may be useful afterall-- they have a listing of Regent Review TV programs on PBS. So get him to the TV- and get thee to study.
is he supposed to go away to school??
My threat of- “if you don’t pass the Regents and start college in August you’re gonna be stuck living at home with me and dad.” – that might have worked on my kid.

“Stuck at home with me and Mom”???

LOL, yeah, that might work! Is there a link to this PBS site?

yes indeedy! Right hand side- look at “In the Spotlight”
first listing was Regents Review Live PBS Schedules just click on.
