SUNY Schools Galore

I'm currently a high school senior and live in New York. I am only applying to SUNY schools and two CUNY schools because that is what my mom is allowing and what we can afford. Also, I didn't try as hard, or rather at all in high school so my grades are no where near what they could have been. However, I didn't do poorly, my unweighted average is a 90 while my weighted is a 100. For all the schools I am applying to, my statistics on Naviance show me in the accepted range. I am applying to Binghamton, Stony Brook, Geneseo, University at Buffalo, New Paltz, and Albany.

Wherever I go I plan on working hard, a lot harder than high school because this is my future. I consider myself intelligent and want to be challenged but perhaps not too much because I would ideally like to be able to achieve a 4.0 so I can transfer to an even better school. I am looking at Cornell because of their great transfer programs and I'm thinking about ether CALS, ILR, or Arts and Sciences. I'm undecided about my major which is why I'm unsure. I also have lineage there.

Because I am undecided, wherever I go I want to have a lot of opportunities, especially because I might not transfer in the end and I want to be happy where I am if I do have to be there for four years.

I'm not the biggest fan of Stony because it is fairly near to my home (about 40 minutes) and it is a big commuter school. I am leaning towards Bing, but of course there is a chance that I won't be accepted. That being said, I basically have no doubts about getting into New Paltz, UB, and Albany because I am way beyond the accepted range on Naviance.

As I said, I am undecided and am all over the place with majors, but I think I have some ideas. I might want to have a few majors and minors because I really want to do everything. I am interested in computer science, english, film, engineering, chemistry, veterinary science, and business.

I have visited Stony, Bing, New Paltz, and Albany(not recently), and have friends who have visited/attend UB and Geneseo and love it. So campus isn't really a big issue. I don't really remember liking Albany that much and I again don't like the big commuting aspect of Stony.

Based on all of this and assuming, I get in everywhere, where do you think would be my best fit? Assuming I only get into the last three, which do you think would be my best fit? Also which have the best programs in the subjects I mentioned? I haven't applied yet so I'm willing to add some schools. Thanks so much if anyone actually read this, I bored myself just writing it. And thank you even more if you answer! :)

You’re a senior and you haven’t applied yet?

Do you have the money for Cornell, or whatever that “better school” might be? Transfers typically get little to no aid. You’re looking at over $60k per year by the time you would transfer. Also I challenge the notion that those schools are “better” in the first place, but that’s another discussion.

You’re all over the place as far as possible majors. I’ll say that if you are only maybe thinking of engineering, forget it. It’s the most difficult major, and if you’re not passionate about it going in, you’re more likely than not to fail and switch out. Also, engineering requires a set path of prerequisites. Difficult to go in undecided, try lots of courses, settle on engineering, and still be able to graduate on time. If you love math (not just like it or good at it) and solving problems, then by all means give engineering a try. But, if you’re not totally into it going in, probably best to focus on something else.

All of the SUNY schools on your list are good. Without knowing which major is list likely, tough to recommend one over the other. In general, Bing is best overall, Buffalo is very good for science and engineering, Geneseo is good for liberal arts, Albany is good for business and politics, not sure about New Paltz. Those are the reputed strengths of each, but they are also good for many other majors.

Wait for your acceptances before worrying about where to go.
