So I got my acceptance letters from both SUNY Stonybrook and SUNY Binghamton. The problem, however, is that Bing--for now--is only allowing me to attend the Spring semester (which starts in January) because they have too many applicants and have no more space for the Fall semester seats. However, they they said that if a lot of people decide not to go to Bing then they'd notify me in May and possibly allow me to begin the Fall semester rather than begin in the Spring semester. I also want to note that I'm receiving almost the exact same financial aid from both Stony and Bing. Now, my question is this:

1) Should I go to SUNY Stonybrook for one semester and then transfer to SUNY Binghamton in the Spring, or should I just attend SUNY Stonybrook and not have to deal with the hassle of transferring and stuff? (Also, Stony is only an hour away from me, whereas Bing is around three and a half hours away.)

depends what you want to study...if you are doing science/math/economics then go to stony brook. if youre doing social sciences and english and languages then go to bing.

So if I would like to pursue a career in business (I'm undecided at this point, but this would probably be what I'd choose if I had to) then I should go to Stony?

Also, which school has the better campus, the better surrounding area, the better dorms, the better food, and the better weather? Thanks in advance.

You should go to Stony Brook first, then after the fall semester decide what to do. In terms of business, Binghamton has a School of Management that's pretty good.

The thing is that I have to send in my reservation payment for the Spring semester by May 1st. Also, if I send it in by May 1st and I get sent a notice telling me that they have space available for the fall term, but I already sent in my money for Stony, would I be able to tell Stony that I'm instead switching to Binghamton even after I paid to go to Stony?

And one more thing: Would switching mid-year from Stony to Bing be a hassle? Like, will I have to complete a lot of forms to switch over to Bing? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure deposits at most colleges are refundable before May 1, but why wouldn't you just wait until a couple days before May 1 to send in your Stony Brook deposit to see if you hear from Bing? After May 1 you lose your deposit.

I can only speak for Stony Brook, but my dad taught there and I lived right outside the campus for 7 years. And I swam there, lol. Anyway. Stony Brook can have beautiful weather, but I think it's the same as all of the rest of Long Island haha. There is not much to do in Stony Brook or Setauket besides malls, movies and diner runs. But NYC/Manhattan are an hour and a half away.. but less than an hour if you take the train (there's a station on campus). So that's a plus. A significant percentage of USB students are commuter students so it's not like a tight community or anything. Can't speak for the food or dorms, sorry. USB has a lot of crap profs but they also have many very intelligent, very good profs who really enjoy teaching undergrad (like my dad :p).

Like someone said above, don't go to USB for english/humanities/etc. They have a stellar math and science dept. though.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. You guys are great. :)

I would appreciate any more help (like, how does Bing's campus compare with Stony's... thanks to the guy above who described how Stony is, though).

I can't believe you live an hour from SB and 3 1/2 hrs from Binghampton and are asking basic questions, including the questions about the surrounding area and the weather. It is way past time that you visited both campuses. No excuses. If nothing else, there is cheap public transportation available.

Oh, I'm going to visit both of them this weekend because I won't have any school. I'd just like for some people to give me general descriptions of the "atmosphere" surrounding both schools/campuses. (e.g. lively, dull, active, inactive, etc.)

A weekend visit to either Binghampton or STony Brook is not going to representative of what life would be like during the academic week.

However, you can still check out the classrooms, the dorms, library (useful in case you need to study...sometimes), athletic facilities, nearby town, general feng shui and karma, student union.

Let's say I pay all the money I need to attend Stony before May 1st. And I also pay the x amount of money required to reserve a seat in Bing for the spring semester before May 1st (the deadline). IF Bing sends me a notice telling me that they have a spot open for the Fall semester AFTER May 1st, will I be able to tell the staff at Stony that I won't be attending their college, regardless of the fact that I paid the money to go there (e.g., tuition)? Or, in contrast, could I also tell Bing that I, even though they accepted me for the Fall semester, I've decided to go to Bing, but paid them only because I decided after May 1st?

Crono, I'm in the same dilema as you. I got accepted into SB but also Binghamton for the Sring 2007 semester. My parents really want me to attend Binghamton because they have heard decent things about it. I actually went to see Binghamton; the aspect that I really disliked was the surrounding city ( It was not on par with my expectations =/).

But anyway I plan on doing Pre-Med so I'm assuming Stony Brook would be a wiser pick for that?

Also Crono, you should really just call one of the schools and ask them about your question. I'm sure the admissions office would be able to tell you an answer. But as far as I know, For binghamton I have until November 2006 to decide if I want to withdraw for tuituin, in which case i think they charge a small fee. I'm not sure that happens the other way around turning down a school you already sent your money too.
