suny stony brook vs suny binghamton

Whats goin on guys. I'm attending Nassau Community College as of right now, and planning on transferring to either binghamton or stony brook in the fall. I need some help on choosing which though. I'm planning on going to school for Political Science/ and pre-law and i know both are tier 1 schools. I've did some research on both schools but i just need some advice here. I am planning on dorming so social life could be factored in too, but i do care more about academics than anything. Thanks a lot in advance.

I personally like Stony Brook better, but not for any academic reason.
Both are great schools though!

Stony Brook for engineering or pre-med or sciences.

Binghamton for business and everything else.

Ditto to what Soccer102592 said. I live 15 minutes away from Stony Brook, and everyone talks about how amazing it is for science (and music possibly… I’ve gone to the Staller Center numerous times for concerts, and every one has been quite amazing), but I’ve also heard complaints about the huge party scene and huge classes. Granted, you would be missing out on 600 people being in your Intro to Chemistry class, as you are a transfer. Once you get past the intro classes, Stony Brook is decent. Unfortunately, I know nearly nothing about Binghamton.

I’m applying to Bing! But I don’t know much about stony brook.

Yea thats what i keep hearing, but bing in also 3 hours away from me. Where as stony is only about an hour or so. Any more advice?

My wife attended college in upstate NY… the weather is the wildcard… how will you respond to the long cold upstate NY winters? It really wore on her emotionally. Different people respond differently to long cold wintes, so it may be just right for you. Stony Brook has pretty decent weather.

Then there is the commuter issue. Being on Long Island, Stony Brook has a lot of kids who go home on the weekends leaving the campus somewhat depleted of energy. If however, you’re one of those weekend commuters, no problem. If not, that weekend exodus might affect your enjoyment of the place.

I vote for Binghamton too.
Both schools have excellent reputations, though I think students at Binghamton are happier.

Bings campus is more remote, Stony Brook is suburban Long Island. We live close to SB and students we know there like it, others love it. All we know at Bing love it up there.

Really, you should apply to both and visit to get a feel for yourself in regard to campus and academics.

Great schools either way!!

Thanks a lot, yea i have applied to both. I’m planning to visit both sometime soon. If anyone else has anymore advice, it would be greatt
