I'm a senior in high school who was accepted to SUNY Stony Brook. It was the only SUNY school I applied to and my parents are kind of pushing me towards it because of the price. I've read a lot of reviews about it on CC and other sites and a lot of them were REALLY negative comments. For example, the social life on campus, academics (I'm planning on majoring in International Studies with maybe a minor in anthropology or linguistics, if I attend), the grading rubric, accessibility of professors, food, dorms, and there was a lot of negative stuff regarding the ethnicity/diversity of the campus. I am Korean, but my parents are both white and I can speak it, but not at all fluently. A lot of people kept saying that the school is predominantly full of "Asians", which, while I would like a diverse campus, is not something that thrills me.

Just wondering if anyone could either put my mind at ease or affirm my concerns!

I don’t go to SB (Binghamton instead) but I know a lot of people who go there. I think you’ll be fine. One thing I learned during the whole college search process is that the people who hate their school are a LOT more vocal than the people who love it. If you’re a normal student having a good time, you’re not going to bother posting to a bunch of sites about how everything is fine. But if you have a grudge against your teachers, or you got sick from eating 8 slices of pizza for lunch, or you have trouble making friends and feel like everyone is out to get you, you’re going to take the time to rant about it on the internet.

It’s true that SB has a lot of people who go home for the weekend, but it’s such a big campus with so many students that it really shouldn’t affect you that much. The people I know there seem to be having a good time without many complaints. Especially considering price is a factor, I would not rule it out at all.

I did apply to other SUNY schools, and did not get in…
And pretty much all private schools are expensive so.
The private schools that I did apply to and get into gave me scholarship money, but SUNY Stony Brook is still the cheapest.

And I never said I didn’t like Stony Brook, I’ve never been, that’s why I’m going to the accepted student day. I had just been reading lots of negative reviews about OTHERS who don’t like it.

Stony Brook is a great school and is probably the top SUNY in terms with reputation. The only SUNYs that come close to Stony are Binghampton, Buffalo, and possibly Albany. It is one of the best schools in the state. I’m surprised you got into Stony Brook and not the other SUNYs because I thought Stony Brook was the most selective.

You can’t always trust what people write on those websites, most of the time only people who have something to complain about write there and do not reflect the majority. While there are a lot of Asians, there are also plenty of white people (and African and Hispanic) so don’t worry. Social life is great.

If I were you I’d go to Stony Brook. Very good school. My brother got into Cornell but went to SBU instead and did not regret it. For the price you can’t beat it.

the SUNY system is a great bang for the buck. Hard to trust reviews about the culture there unless you actually spend some time. There are so many things that factor into someones experience. I say give it a shot. You can always transfer.

A friend’s son is going there and he’s having a great first year. He’s got a research gig this semester (unpaid) and it’s looking like he will be getting a paid research job over the summer. I personally think quite well of StonyBrook in math, science and computer science.
