SUNY study abroad

Anyone have any experience with any SUNY study abroad programs? Either have gone or are planning to go?
Thanks.

I also want this answered since I'm very interested their study abroad program.

I'm interested too:D I hope to study abroad at least once during college!

SUNY System Abroad

Any SUNY student at any campus can participate in any program at any of the other campuses. One of the great SUNY perks. HIGHLY recommended if you can do it -- it's the only thing I regret not doing in college.

Chris

Hey Chris, are there any scholarships that can help with the cost of the trip? And can you participate in more than one study-abroad program? Thank you in advance. :)

From what I understand any scholarships and financial aid that you have on your home campus carries over.

What if you want to stud somewhere that SUNY doesn't have a program? I checked out the link SUNY SYSTEMS ABROAD and it doesn't have anything in London, for example.

They don't have London but they have Newcastle Upon Tyne which is in the UK. I would doubt scholarship money would transfer over if you chose someplace they are not affiliated with.

At SUNY New Paltz they have study abroad programs at Middlesex University, North London Campus and Kingston University.

I studied abroad. I did the Asia Freeman Three Cities program through SUNY Brockport but attend SUNY Plattsburgh. It doesn't matter which school you go to, you can do any study abroad program through any college.

I don't recommend working with Brockport, though. They were a pain to deal with and one of the people in the study abroad office, I believe her name was Kim was constantly rude and flippant.

I recall she called me on the phone, said my name incorrectly, I corrected her and she said "whatever". Though, that's not a big deal it shows their level of professionalism... or lack of.

The other students who were in the Freeman program also went through SUNY Brockport and also reported the same problem with their study abroad offices and the woman I spoke of earlier.

Not all SUNY abroad offices are like that, of course.

Also, my financial aid did carry over for the program. I do recommend getting additional scholarships, there are hoards online, as my program cost $18,000 for a semester not including the $10,000 airline ticket.

You don't have to do a SUNY program. You can attend a SUNY school and do any program with any college. For example, I just applied to do a program with NYU even though I go to SUNY Plattsburgh.

It's just a bit easier to stay within SUNY with their application process.

acme- there are a number of SUNY programs in London, including one from cortland (my kids school) and it seems Brockport has a few programs in London. Check Chris's link again- under United Kingdom and all the programs from London, the surrounding area and the rest of the UK show up. There are even internship programs in London through Brockport and I think Binghamton too.

We haven't started the SUNY study abroad process yet, but d is seriously thinking about study abroad for next year. I can say that in being on the SUNY website, I can vouch that there are hundreds of intersting programs that are offered through SUNY.
My kid is thinking Australia, and it looks like Cortland or Plattsburg may have programs that will fit her needs. There is also a program in London which meet her academic interests. So we'll see what develops over the next few months.

bit of an update- d just informed me that Cortland has their own program summer travel program geared for sport management majors. As it is just an internal program for Cortland SM students, it does not appear on the SUNY travel abroad website.

So- if your kid is at a SUNY school- there may also be other "special" study abroad opportunities that are available within the school.
