I am currently a sophomore looking to transfer to a SUNY school. I am a biology major, with a pre-health concentration, with hopes of becoming a Physician Assistant soon. I have completed 33 credits so far, and as of january I would have completed 52 credits. Last semester i had a 3.73 gpa and made the deans list, while with my summer class i just completed I have a 3.37 overall gpa. I have taken around 5 AP classes in high school, had over 500 hours of community service and a state award for excellence in community service. I was in the top 30% of my high school with a 3.4 gpa also.

I plan on applying to the following:
SUNY Binghamton
SUNY Oswego
University at Buffalo
University of Albany
SUNY Stony Brook
SUNY Oneonta

What are my chances for these schools? or any other schools i should possibly look into transferring to?

Is it really that difficult to transfer into a university in the spring as compared to the fall?

Other than Stony Brook, do any of these school actually offer a PA program? I know that UB does not (D’Youville in Buffalo does). Or were you planning to apply to other schools after you receive your BS? PA programs generally have high healthcare experience requirements so you might want to look into ways you can start fulfilling those hours. If finances are not a big concern, I know PA students at Lemoyne and RIT who seem very happy with their schools.

^ to add to sk8rmom, were you thinking of combined programs? because generally any sort of combined program won’t take transfer students. i assume you’re just applying as a degree-seeking student and then will apply the regular way.

with a 3.37, you may have some difficulty getting into bing or stony brook (i second seachai’s advice to stay away from there, btw). where ever you go, you should try to find places that have programs where you can volunteer, in which case buff and sb may be good choices because of the medical schools. albany medical college isn’t affiliated with the suny system, but you could probably see about volunteering there as well

yeah i know its too late to trasnfer into a program like that, so i would graduate with a bs and then go onto a graduate program. That is why i am trying to stay in the suny system since i live in the state, or possibly somewhere else where financial aid is good or the school isn’t so expensive.

Fwiw, my D was accepted at Butler for a combo program. As an incoming freshman with a high GPA, but avg test scores, she received about $17K in scholarship/grants and COA was around $38K. It was one of the worst FA packages she received. YMMV

I’m pretty sure that both LeMoyne and D’Youville accept sophomore transfers and offer scholarships for transfers which are published on their websites. Both are in urban areas where there is an abundance of low cost off-campus housing available nearby. You might play with some numbers and see if it would be more cost-effective to transfer into a combined program…if you can escape a year of paying grad rates and work instead, it may be worth spending more at the undergrad level if you can swing it.

Alternatively, you might target SUNY schools who have early assurance options with PA schools. Albany Med, for example, has agreements with SUNY Albany and Oneonta:

yeah my main problem is financial aid, because i was all set to go to a $47,000 school with a decent financial package but then they changed it on me for the last minute due to the state budget, and then i was no longer able to attend. So now i am trying to still transfer but to a school where it won’t cost me $30,000 a year to attend. So since i am a NYS resident it doesn’t cost me as much money as it would if i were to transfer out of state to a school like Butler that was suggested earlier

Totally makes sense to transfer to a SUNY.
If you have the money to apply to all of them, do it. If you have the time, visit a couple of the campuses as well as the area around the campus.

yeah i am still trying to narrow it down into places that would help me more for an undergraduate and give me a leg up on grad school, but i feel like if i applied to binghamton i wouldn’t get in, and i would love to go there…its so stressful
