university of chicago? by any chance?
please rate other schools too. ill rate back, thank you

The competition in the Asian from NY pool is brutal. There are many, many highly qualified candidates with top stats competing for the few seats alloted to this pool at the ivies/peers.

Hopefully your class rank is top and you can bring up your CR and writing scores.

Yeah, I agree. You need to bring your SAT reasoning scores up and get good SAT II scores on all the remaining exams you’re taking. If you can do that, then you’ll probably have a good chance of getting in UChicago.

my overall class rank is probably: 20/131, its kinda hard to get a higher ranker because my school is nationally ranked #64. i think for my grade explanation, ill tell that i have “exponential growth” in my grade and my junior final grade was in top 1 % of the class.

im not planning to take the SAT again because Im pretty sure that i have tried all my best in getting those scores.

anyways, thanx for the chancing

Do you have safeties?

Wait a minute…his SAT is 1500 / 1600 (Chicago only considers CR and M) so he’s probably fine there. Besides, Chicago seems not to place as much emphasis on test scores as other schools…not to say that they aren’t important, but a 1500 is around the 70% percentile at UChicago for the class of 2013, so if he were to get rejected, it would most likely not be because of his SAT scores. Though, I agree, at other ivies/schools at that level his writing and reading score will be major minuses.

I don’t get why you say reading will be around 700 and then says later that you are not taking the SAT again. Have you taken it or not?

Your E.Cs are superb. Your SATs are good. Your gpa is decent. Unlikely combo for an asian.
HYPSM- If your essays are truly as amazing as you believe and are not the typical asian immigrant’s reflection on his/her assimilation into the US, than perhaps you have a good chance.
Chicago- Very attainable, your E.Cs are going to be a big factor in your admission.

@Circular, i didnt exactly remember my reading score, and the correct score is CR=690.
@redroses, my safeties will be NYU? idk, my sister really expect me to get into top 10 universities, and i havent think abt safeties that much.
@Loncria, thanks for your post, truly appreciated. + what do you mean by “If your essays are truly as amazing as you believe and are not the typical asian immigrant’s reflection on his/her assimilation into the US, than perhaps you have a good chance.” can you be a bit more specified?

actually not, the asians that are competitive are the ones from the upper class, but for the most part, Asians at New York are pretty ruined .

Oh btw, my recommendations are going to be an epic, i read one of them, it’s like amazing. both of my teachers know me very well, and one of the teachers is also my club supervisor. in addition, I have a character recommendation from my mentor who graduated from harvard. that recommendation is also good. D: and the counselor’s recommendation is good as well because she knows everything about me, and she has a really good impression of me.

As long as your essays have any substance and aren’t just stating the obvious like how hard it was to pick up a new culture and still excel in school, then you should be good. And great job on getting those recommendations. (= The only teacher that even knows my first name has never given a recommendation in 10 years, probably due to his notorious reputation for giving Cs to 3.8+ GPA seniors in AP Biology. And this is one competitive school too.

You need safeties, kids mean well here but they clearly often don’t understand the competition.

I think you can get into NYU, but can you afford it? It does not give good aid.

Apply to NYU, Columbia and Cornell through HEOP. I guarantee you’ll get in through that program. Without it, your stats are still really good and competitive enough to do well with admissions.

Also, I advise you to check out QuestBridge. You seem to fit the applicant mold. I commend your strides despite your family background btw!

There’s a Cornell Minds Matter chapter. If you write your essay related to that, you’ll likely get in lol.

So you quit your jobs and your average jumped 10 points? nice.

@justadream92, thank you. so Im wondering, if i apply through HEOP, my only concern is that there will be tons of people just like me. they are all immigrants that have the same story. Therefore, i wont be able to stand out as much. you feel me? Can you please give me some more advise?

@Fallenmerc, i never know there is a Minds Matter chapter at Cornell, thankx for telling me. Can you please further elaborate on the topic? thanx a lot.

I see where you’re coming from, since I had the same problem when I was applying. The best thing I can tell you is that regardless of HEOP, you’re still going to be up against people who are completely identical to you, so therefore, I advise you to really put in some work on those essays. They’ll either make you or break you when it comes to decision time. But like I said, I really really want you to check out QuestBridge. It’s sort of like HEOP but on a national level. Is it competitive? Yes. But there’s no easy way through college admissions when you’re applying to elite schools. QuestBridge will definitely get your foot in the door and it’ll give you the extra edge to distinguish yourself from other applicants.

I’d say Chicago is a good fit. HYP are unpredictable but ya never kno!! Stanford is a possibility
