I know my GPA is terrible but do i stand a chance at all? I had a huge upward trend from a 2.5 Freshman year to a 4.1 Junior year.
Teacher Recommendations are great 9/10 Essays 8/10

Your GPA definitely weighs you down, but everyone has weaknesses. I think you should focus on your strengths and from there decide if you should apply.

@dreamerlol: A 3.4 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale is an 85. Unless you are a recruited athlete that score is too low for Yale, even though you are a URM. Your GPA indicates that you might struggle with the workload on Yale’s campus – that’s the first thing Admissions is going to notice.

At my son and daughter’s high school, not one student in the past 15 years has been admitted to Yale with below a 93 unweighted GPA. Does your high school use Naviance? If so, check the data. I’m willing to wager that it’s about the same at your high school (sorry). Please speak with your guidance counselor about applying to more appropriate colleges.

Hi dreamerlol: If the application fee is not a problem for you and your family, I say go ahead and give it a try. Remember, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!

I’m still in shock that a kid from our school got in to Harvard with a 26 ACT! She was not legacy or an athlete.

It’s true that the competition is extremely stiff, so try and make sure your essays are air tight and maybe even a little unique, and I believe that you already mentioned that your recommendation letters are really good. If there is a reason as to why your GPA is low, and you have a story that fits within your essay, tell it.

BUT by all means apply to a variety of colleges. There are some students that have very high GPAs that do not get into Yale.

OP If your app reader is able to move beyond the 3.4 GPA and see that you have an upward trajectory, I think you have a chance. A 4.1 Junior year is a great indication that you have matured academically (and maybe emotionally).

But it is a very low chance. You should put good effort into the Yale supplements but also focus on some other schools where you might have a better chance.

If you are low income you can email Yale directly to ask for a fee waiver. Not sure if they do this but many other schools do.

Wow a 26 ACT! Did she have a good GPA? Great EC’s? That’s so inspiring! So many people don’t apply because of their standardized test scores, this really goes to show that scores are not the end of everything. Go for it OP! everyone has a chance, the only way you won’t have a chance is if you don’t apply. According to statistics EVERYONE’S chances are very slim. Chancing is stupid. We can’t predict the adcoms decision - all we can do is prepare for the worst, and make smart choices in terms of the other college’s we apply to. Thousands of “highly qualified” candidates get deferred every year, go check out this years Harvard ED thread and see the amount of glittering apps that got rejected and deferred. Again, I would say it doesn’t hurt to try, just don’t set your heart on it and make sure you have back up schools.

im excited to see if you get in! i think with URM and upward trend, you have a shot check out the threads, there are actually a few people with 1900/2000 scores and/or low gpa that get in with your kind of background! ill be rooting for you:)
