So yesterday I basically had a panic attack. I was going through my application (again) and noticed something strange at the bottom of my print preview. I have no idea how I missed it in all my other checks of my application, but somehow in the document that held my CAS essay I had my notes/edits from people who proofed my essay at the bottom. Needless to say, I freaked. My counselor said that it was just an honest mistake and that if I emailed UVa admissions they would do their best to fix the issue. I'm just worried that this will affect my application; I really need it to be spotless! So my question is, should I be worried? I sent the exact same essay with the notes at the bottom taken out but I'm stressing over the fact that they already read my application and saw the stupid mistake I made. There isn't anything bad in the notes/edits, it's just super embarrassing and a blemish on my application. I received an prompt response (thank god it was as prompt as it was or else I would've freaked again, you guys rock!) that said my email was forwarded to my file. Will the old essay be taken out and the new one put in? Or will my new document be there with the old one? Maybe I'm putting too much necessary stress on myself for this, it was an honest mistake! Thanks for any advice, everyone!

We wouldn’t remove the old essays, just add the new ones.

It happens. I read one this year that included notes, along with “maybe I’ll say…” and even a “blah blah blah” at one point. It was kind of funny. That kind of mistake alone is not a reason to deny someone.

How much would an error like that affect admission? Do you mean you read it as in read it for an admissions decision?

If an application is sloppy overall, then I’d say uploading notes instead of an essay would have a big impact.

If the application is solid, this wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me.

dont worry! i was worried too… if you look into my post history youll see i had a similar issue in the early action round. i accidentally sent in a application where i repeated the same line in different paragraphs. i had turned in one of my drafts in which i was deciding where the sentence worked better rather than my final. but it all worked out, i still got into the university and even the science scholars program.
like what dean j said, if you seem to be an unorganized/ inconsistent student in your app, it might reaffirm that to the officers. otherwise, im sure they recognize that this is a stressful time for students and that were all human

@DeanJ: That makes sense. What did you think of the application that had that error?

@MDNeuroHopeful: Congratulations! UVa is such an awesome school, I hope you intend on going! It’s just such a stupid mistake that could influence admission, no matter how “human.” :(

Bump, please!

You have had a Dean from UVA admissions answer you… I’m not sure more strangers from the internet are going to do any better.

I was hoping for a follow up from Dean J since she has already encountered an application with an error on the essay, haha. Hopefully it isn’t too much to ask! Thanks everyone

You got two responses from Dean J already and have as much information as you need to make the correction and hope for the best.

I know that it may sound, quite frankly, a bit annoying at this point, but the only reason I keep asking is to get an idea as to how “worried” I should be. Dean J has already encountered a similar situation and there is no one else who would know better than her anyways, of course. But there is nothing I can do at this point anyways, I suppose, just nice to know where I stand with UVA, WAHOOWA!
