Supplement Essay Error

UGH my nightmare pretty much just came true,
I spent so much time on my supplement essays, and at the last moment began to write a thought but forgot to finish it because I got sidetracked with something else, saved it, somehow failed to see it, and sent it on the 31st... so now I have a sentence that's completely broken and doesn't make sense.

Does anyone know if this will hamper my chances of admission? Will the adcoms see it as if I failed to put enough effort into my essays? Because UVA is my first choice and I'm now very very worried about my chances, even though I feel like my stats and extra curriculars are pretty good.

I almost wish I didn't relook at my essays so I won't have to spend the next two months worrying. Well at least I now know to reread my essays a million times before I send them... I just hate myself for doing it on my UVA :(.

You can send in a hard copy with an explanation - you are human and made a mistake. I have no idea whether or not the admissions committee will accept it, but it’s worth a try, right?
I would think this scenario is not as bad as a bad grade, low test scores, or just an overall poorly written essay - sounds as if the reader would see that it was a one time error.
Good luck!!

My son’s roommate had an error somewhere in his application last year. When he wrote to explain he did so in a poem. He swears this is why he was accepted! It happens. Take a deep breath.

Admissions has people who process corrections and glitches, via a special email address, before the apps ever get to a reader. Call and ask if your situation would apply. If it does, ask if they prefer this in a hard copy or electronically. Anything that is sent hard copy will have to be scanned so they may rather skip that step.

Email only. No mail, please!

I just created my UVA SIS login and can’t seem to find where I should email to send a correction, could anybody please direct me? Also, does anyone know how the process works? Should I send the “correct” essay (only changing the mistake), or should I just direct them towards the mistake? Will it make my application stand out negatively (this is what I’m worried about the most), as opposed to just leaving it be?

Thanks a lot! You guys are lifesavers!

A minor error can actually be a positive thing in an essay - it shows that you did it yourself, as opposed to having it “edited” by a professional.

Call admissions and explain what you did to us, clearly and calmly. If this is something that can be amended you will be given an email address and instructions. Otherwise, as charlie states, this gives a genuine quality to your essay (and I honestly subscribe to this thought). Take a breath and move on. You will drive yourself nuts looking back over and finding things you would possibly change in your application. Don’t look anymore.

Our email addresses are in the first part of the instructions. Look at the 2nd paragraph.

No need to call. :)
