Supplement ESSAY Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know the application due date is right around the corner but I need a quick help!
I have a problem with the supplement essay on the community (250 words). I know it has to be simple and short but I am confused and don't know what to write about.

Can you guys help?

Thank you so much :-)

Write about the community you are a part of- are you religious? Jewish? Christian? Muslim? Are you part of some ethnic community?
Basically they want to see that you’re an involved member of something…
For example, I am Jewish with Russian heritage, and the area I live in has a very tightly knit Jewish-Russian community. I mentioned all the good things about my community and my place within it.
Good luck! :)

It can be about literally any group of people you are apart of… Your family, your school, a sports team, a club, your village/town, a place where you volunteer, a church or other religious group, a group of friends, a country club, some gym where you belong… Anything you consider yourself apart of in which other people are involved and have some sort of impact on your life. It’s intentionally very open-ended.

Try not to overanalyze the prompt- you can write about anything that you have been a part of and how it has influenced you- if that means writing about your a job you have had, make your world the place where you worked. Or perhaps it was a club you enjoyed or a passion for a certain hobby. I agree with the other posters. You shouldn’t have to look that hard because everyone has had a unique experience.

@PsychoDad10 is right, don’t over-analyze and invent a moral to every story. I simply wrote about a website I frequent and the community of writers/ readers/ inspiring intellectuals and how it’s made me more confident in writing/performing. ANYTHING that YOU feel strongly about, write!

(Also, the 250 word limit is just a suggestion. I mean, don’t go over 400 but anything below 350 is fine).

Good luck! :)

Heh, I don’t know whether or not this is good advice. But I was having a similar issue back in October when I applied to Michigan, because I didn’t feel that I belonged to any sort of community. Anyway, I applied EA (and was accepted) and I ended up writing that supplement about how I am the stereotypical white teenager living this easy, middle-class existence. You know, the opposite of what they were looking for. But I did also write about how I was eager to escape the suburban bubble and experience the real world, etc.

I guess what I’m getting at is that they’ll take almost anything, so long as it shows that you’ll bring something unique to campus. Hope this helps!

^ I felt the same way, MWG7, in the respect that I didn’t feel like I was part of a community because I’m white, middle class, non-religious, etc. So I just wrote about my XC team, and people (and apparently U-M) liked my essays.

Find something you feel like you’re a part of and that you love doing and write about it. It’ll work.
