Supplement Essay Help

For the third optional essay prompt, "Notre Dame students are encouraged to learn through discovery by interacting with the world around them. Describe your ideal intellectual field trip." What type of things are people writing about? I'm just not sure how far-fetched and creative this is supposed to be or if it is supposed to be a more feasible option? any help would be appreciated :) thank you!!

Do you think this prompt is asking us to make up our own ideal intellectual field trip, or can it also be answered by describing one you’ve been on? I’m wondering that myself

I described a theoretical ideal one, but a past one can also work.

Theoretical = what your values and interests are

Past = lesson learned, beginning of a passion for a subject, etc…

It depends on what you want to convey, in my opinion.

I used the creative route. You can talk about whatever you want. From the ND admissions blog:

“Remember those Magic School Bus clips we were watching? Those were the inspiration for this question. If you have an academic passion, how would you explore it beyond the classroom setting? Creativity is welcome here, too.”

I talked about something that is not actually possible but I thought would be fascinating.

I did a past one, just to have some concrete examples on what I learned and how that spiked my intellectual curiosity.

As long as you can provide specific examples to what you have done or what you want to do that should reveal enough about your personality.

bump!

i’m still struggling with this essay and need to submit my app in 5 days! is this supposed to be like time-travel crazy type stuff or like a realistic type trip to a business meeting since that is what i want to study? i just need a general idea of what people are writing about! thank you to anyone who answers!!!

i’m confident in my other 2 essays, but am having trouble with the remaining prompts. this one seems to be the best bet, but do you suggest I move onto another prompt that I fear I struggle with also?

It can be anything you like. If you read the Notre Dame blog it says it can be creative

I think the most important thing is that it’s honest and genuine. Just be truthful - if you could take a field trip to experience or learn about something that really interests you, where would you go? I don’t think it necessarily has to pertain to your planned major or career, because after all, most people have many different interests. Just think about something that would be really exciting or interesting to you. And don’t spend too much time trying to think of something that will impress them. An honest, genuine essay will be a lot more impressive than one that sounds forced and contrived.

If it still helps anybody, I went the unorthodox route and wrote about traveling back in time. I think the admissions officers will accept anything, they just want an honest depiction of who you are

Did you get accepted?
