i have ran a few searches, none of them satisfied my question.

i wrote an essay with 521 words. i tried to go back and take out any unnecessary things, but was unable to find any. would it be perfectly fine, if i left it 521 words? or should i find a way to minimize the essay to 500 words?

I did 530 for a strict limit of 500 words. It may not have been best, but look at it this way, who is going to count every single word? Go 800 and they’ll know you went over, but my guess is 520 looks like 500. By the way, MIT counts, but I cannot imagine anyone else doing so. Where are you applying?
