I have written many essays for other college applications but this one is just stumping me. Could anyone just post suggestions for what they talked about or any ideas for a completely stumped person such as myself?

Thanks

talk about what you want to do at duke, what talents or energies you'd bring. they want to know what you will add to the university, not just "it has a good basketball team and princeton review ranks it kind of high and yeah."

I talked about the diversity at Duke. I found stats for the Duke, and then stats for minorities in business in general (the field I wanted to go to). I discussed Duke's commitment to diversity as demonstrated by this and several culture clubs.

i wrote about soccer (my main ec) and what values it has taught me (time-management, commitment, respect etc). i went on to discuss that wheni visited duke, i found my personality and whatnot in the Duke enviornment.

how could you guys write all that in 1-2 paragraphs?

they were on the lengthy side, but not to the point of obscenity

Hey, is anyone writing an essay for the section about "meaningful activity"? If so, how long was yours? The app says 1 or 2 paragraphs, ...would a 500 word additional essay explaining an activity be going overboard?

does it have to be specific? (tweety114, did you write exact statistics and stuff?)
or is it more like.. "i like diversity and strong engineering program..blahblah"

??

i know a friend who wrote about specific professors at duke, etc, but i'm sure that's not necessary. i wrote about why i loved engineering, why duke was a fit for me, and why i would excel there. :)

Like qubic's friend, i wrote about what major i wanted to do, and some of the top professor's involved in it at duke. I don't know how much this helped, but i did get accepted ED. From what i've heard from the admissions officers, thousands of kids just write these really general essays (ie "I want to go to Duke bcz it's a good school, and fun too!). I would suggest being as specific and as in-depth as possible about what you want from your experience at Duke. Name names!

chuckleybob, do you mind sending me a copy of your essay, i did the same thing as you but im not sure if its too general or not, id just like to compare. please

i would like to do same. Chuckleybob if you dont mind, please pm me :D

thanks.

the same?!!

roflmfao

omg
i just realized just now, that on the why duke essay (which i made from the why penn essay) i forgot to replace Penn with Duke on a sentence. lmaoooooo, they are gonna get a good laugh out of this

"blah duke blah duke blah blah blah duke duke duke i love duke its awesome blah
I feel that if I am able to attend University of Pennsylvania, I am guaranteed an intense mental challenge. Duke Duke Duke blah blah blah blah blah blah, blah. Duke."

oh man i hope i get an alumni interview so i can laugh it off with him/her
COMMUNITY COLLEGE HERE I COME

blah

damn, that sucks...though i would say about 75% of my friends at Duke (and I) chose it over UPenn (the actual cross-admit percentage of people who choose Duke over Penn is around 65%) so I don't think admissions will be threatened or anything...which i guess is good news for you lol

i would actually much rather go to penn because its 10 minutes from where i live now and i love philly. but duke is a great school and im sure many would choose it over penn. im just hopin they dont rip up the app and ignore it.

the only reason someone would choose penn over duke is for undergrad business, you would not have to go to grad school, EVER! but im still applying to duke only

Would anyone be willing to proofread my essay and/or send me theirs so I could compare? I'm also having the problem of knowing whether or not mine is too general. Help would be greatly appreciated!

to chuckleybob: I found a list of faculty members, but how exactly did you incorporate them into your essay besides something like "I am thankful that I would be learning stuff from people like X, Y, and Z?"

I just talked about how working with a certain faculty member and learning from their skills/expertise would really benefit me in what i am choosing to study.
