Is it optional for W&M?
I checked it out on common app and it lookes like its optional but not sure...

Yes, the supplemental essay is optional. It’s a great way for you to share more about yourself but absolutely not required.

Can a not so good essay hurt more than not submitting on at all?
I am not so confident at writing :/

If an essay is poorly written it can hurt an applicant. If you do not feel comfortable completing the optional submission that is completely fine.

Bear in mind though that the supplement does not have to be an essay. It can be pretty much anything- videos, writings, pictures, ect. So even if you are not great at writing you can still make the supplement a strong part of your application.

the supplement is a fun way to display a different side of you. when i applied as a freshman i baked a tribe pride pound cake. when i applied as a transfer i wrote an essay looking back on my interview with the william and mary staff that took place the summer before my senior year of high school. as long as you are showing a different side of yourself than just a typical essay, i feel you can’t go wrong!

The supplement was probably my best essay by far of any college essay. More then likely because it was the only essay I really liked because it was fun and I could show my personality in it. If I get in, I will post it here. Most people who have reviewed it at my school or elsewhere have loved it.

I liked my supplemental essay. It was unconventional. =)
