<p>My supplement essays always cross the word-limit by 100 words. Would it be a problem if the essay doesn't adhere to the exact word limit? Would it hurt my chances? </p>

<p>If you keep the essays to under one page (unless they have [100,1000] character counts) then it should be fine.</p>

Try to keep it under the limit if it is specified. Although you can exceed relatively. For example for a 500 word one, you can stretch upto 600 words. For a 100 word one, exceed by 20. In some essays, there is a char count. There you can’t exceed.</p>

<p>Imagine you need to propose marriage to a guy. The proposal shouldn’t be shorter than 1 minute, because then it won’t be special. It shouldn’t be longer than 4 minutes … the novelty will wear off (unless you are proposing at half-time during the Super Bowl - on the big screen). It should be somewhere in the middle.</p>
<p>Don’t laugh at that analogy Read it carefully, and elaborate it to college essays.</p>

Umm…adcoms on different forums on CC say that a little above doesn’t hurt as long as it isn’t unnecessary which I am assuming it isn’t. Also one page, single spaced is way way more than 600 words.</p>
<p>Nope. I am assuming you are using font size 11? or 12? Doesn’t matter. Either way, most colleges mention in their supplements that the ‘Why’ essays shouldn’t exceed one page. But seriously … quality >> quantity.</p>
