don't know if it's just a glitch with the preview or if columbia intends me to write less than the specified 1500 characters. all my short answers are a tad bit less than 1500 characters and yet, when i go to preview them, they get an entire paragraph of text cut off.

Do you have any empty lines of space? If so, you could always delete the line. Check for extra words that are redundant and can be eliminated.

ahh got it. it was the empty lines of space that did it. it really doesn’t allow for more than 1 or 2 empty lines of space. thanks for the help samurailandshark :)

No worries. Glad it was simple. I know when I was working with students who had that issue recently, it was the extra lines of space!

Good luck with your applications! Remember…don’t wait till the last minute to get them submitted!

Are you sure you don’t have over 2 billion posts? Interesting glitch…

We are a small group that has that glitch. Some teenager math genius explained it to me, but all I heard was blah, blah, blah, so I couldn’t possibly explain it! ;)

CRAP I just realized that the same thing happened to all my essays but my app is already submitted!!!

Is there ANYTHING at all I can do to fix it??

UGH I’m so mad at myself right now!

Didn’t you do a print preview before submitting? They actually make you check a box that you have reviewed your entire application before sending submit.

No - there isn’t anything you can do. How bad is the damage? Once apps are submitted, they can’t be fixed. If you had done this to just one, and then noticed there is a way to create an alternative version of the common app for other schools.

Sorry.

I tried the print preview button but it wasn’t working (my browser was stupidly blocking the commonapp popup and not telling me) so I had to just assume that it was fine. I only tried a different browser today after seeing this thread. I probably should have realized that it was something like that.

The damage isn’t horrible for 3 of them, but it’s kind of bad for one of them. Columbia was a reach for me to begin with, so I doubt that I’ll have much of a chance now.

Thanks for the help anyway…

I have had trouble with the print preview this application season with my students. It’s really critical that before starting the Common Application students use the correct browser and update any software - it says at the Common App troubleshooting site.

These admissions office know that there have been truncated essays/short answers in the past. It’s possible that it won’t hurt you, even with the reach school.

Good luck!

Just wanted to add that my son had this problem with Columbia also. Common App said there were 180 characters left, but on print preview 2 lines had been truncated. He had to cut down the essay.
