I’m applying to Brown as a transfer student and the supplement essay question is “How did you become interested in Brown?” What exactly do they want for this question? I know it sounds straightforward, but what kind of information can they really gain about from from knowing this?

Honestly I had the most trouble with that question, because I've known about Brown for as long as I can remember, so it was difficult to talk about how I heard of it.
I ended up writing an essay that started with an anecdote about a friend I had there who was taking this random elective that had nothing to do with her major, and used that anecdote as a thinly veiled premise to just turn it into a rehash of my "what are you academic interests and why are you interested in brown" essay.

well, you are applying to brown, so you obviously have some desire to go there. and you couldnt have made your decision from one source, so talk about how you really got interested.

did you visit, see the information on the website, look at stats, what?

Many students answer that question very simply, by saying things like "my guidance counselor" or "my friend who goes there," with no elaboration at all. Other students use it as xenon suggests, giving details on how they researched the school, or as mochabear did (that sounds like a good response, btw).

There are numerous questions on this forum from students wondering how they can demonstrate their level of interest in Brown, since Brown doesn't track visits. Your answer to this question can be one excellent way to do that.

sigh I seriously don't know how I got to know Brown... I might end up talking about CC. HAHA
