Supplement: Why __ department of study?

Hey Guys!

On the supplement, where they ask you to describe why you applied to a certain college (i.e. Engineering, Natural Sciences, Music, etc.) it gives you a 7900 character limit, which is A LOT.

Question: How long do they expect the answer to be? Mine is about 300 words or 2,000 characters... is this too short? I don't know what else I can say; I'd just be rambling.

Thanks in advance!

Actually, it's 400 words, ~2500 characters.

Thanks again! :)

yea i was about to post a topic on this too. i dont think i can write any more than 150...

Are you doing it online? There is just a limited amount of space on the paper version, and I don't think I will be able to write that much.

yea online. how much space is there on the paper version

Umm...eleven lines.

thats as much as the why rice one so i guess 20 words is fine

Yeah I wrote just over 150 words for that one.

How long are you all making your "Why Rice?" essay?

That one will be substantially longer, I think they are looking for 2-3 pages there. It will be tough for me to write though; maybe if I wait until after I visit in December it will become easier.

Nevermind about the "Why Rice?" essay. It says no more than 200 words. The diversity essay is the one that is two to three pages.

Oh yeah, my bad, for some reason I thought yeahallie was talking about the diversity one.

what did u guys write for this essay. im stuck at 50 words

My essay was about 800 words, because I copied it from carnegie mellon's, which wanted a page.

Hopefully it didn't say:
"And this is why I want to attend Carnegie Mellon's department of Engineering."

ROFL that's funny :)

Oh, I sure hope you didn't do that though!

Should the "Diversity Essay" really be that long? I sort-of assumed that it should be about the same length as the common app essay. That is: 500-words or so. Otherwise, wouldn't the admissions officers get bored reading it and stop?
