in the supplement, it says the response should be one page (approx 500 words). my essay is 624 and is less than one full page. i recently cut out 100 words from it..is this length ok?

524 words should be ok.

If its less than one full page then its fine. But make sure you either 1.5 or double space it.

or the adcoms will have to squint to read it.

The closer to the limit the better. My son and I attended the info session for Penn this past summer. During the Q&A there was a question about the essays; the presenter pointed out that in a typical day an admissions counselor reviews 100-125 applications and therefore reads 300-375 essays. Blowing through the upper limit probably won’t kill your application but you’ll certainly run the risk that the reader may just stop after the first page. I think 624 words is too much, 524 words is OK and 498 is better.

Get in, say what you have to say and get out. A huge part of writing in college is about making your point in a clear and concise manner.
