Supplemental ap asking for list of other schools I'm applying to. Issues with this?

One of the schools that I'm applying to has a section on their supplemental application that asks for the names of the other colleges/universities that I'm applying to. This seems a little strange, as you're essentially providing competitive information to one school that could have admission's or financial aid implications. If school 1, for example, knows that I'm applying to school's 2 & 3, and these particular schools are perhaps more or less competitive, or known to provide weaker or superior financial aid, could this potentially have an affect on the acceptance and/or aid offer offer from school 1?

Is this a common question on college applications? Is there any good reason to provide accurate information or just leave it blank? Any thoughts on this? Perhaps a silly question.

Yeah I saw this on the application for SUNY Geneseo…which kind of bothered me because it’s one of my safety schools. I was concerned it might hurt my chances if I put listed universities like HYPSM…because Geneseo might think I’d probably reject they’re offer.

But in regards to your questions I don’t believe it’s a fairly common question on apps, but I would answer it honestly. Perhaps they’re just using your answer to compile statistics of who their competition is, and what other schools their applicants most commonly apply to. It’s not a silly question though, and hopefully a more knowledgeable poster can give you a better answer.
