Supplemental Ed Opp Grant - more info

Does anyone know particulars about the "Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant"?

Looking for any specifics on how this award is made, why, for how much?

As I understand you apply for the FAFSA to get it. Anything else? Do you have to ask the school? Is it automatic? First-come, first-served?

In this case the EFC is zero. The school is on the "list" of those who can receive this money.

thanks.

SEOG is one of three campus based need based federal aid programs. The other 2 are Work Study and Perkins loans. Campus based means that a school is given a limited amount of funds for these programs and decides how best to allocate those funds. This means each school sets their own criteria for awarding the funds and the maximum they will award to one person. Even then, there are usually more students that qualify than there are funds available. The criteria and the funding will vary by school. So at one schools you might get it and at another you might not.

At my son’s school, the maximum SEOG was $200. At my daughter’s school it was $2,000. She had a 0 EFC and some years she did get SEOG, others she did not.

It is all based on FAFSA EFC (zero is often the cut off but I have heard of other criteria being used), the school’s own criteria, and how much funding they have in a particular year. Once the funds are awarded the school can not get any more, so applying early is a good idea.
