I was told I could write an additional essay and put it in Section 9 - "(Optional) No admission application can meet the needs of every individual. If you think additional information or material will give us a more thorough impression of you, please respond below."

So I have 2 essays and they don't fit in the preview.

Are they okay with me sending them another way? If yes,

How should I send it to them, through mail? If yes, then do I just put a hard copy in a big manila folder and send it to the admissions? And all I need to include is my name and birth date and essays?

Supplemental documents may be sent via snail mail or fax, whichever you prefer. And yes, you may send them an additional essay if you think there was no other room in your application to mention the referred subject.

IMO though (wait for more authoritative sources such as mollie or MITChris or similar), unless there is a clear specific reason for including two supplemental “essays” eg a research abstract and a general essay, you should pick your favorite one and just submit that one because most likely that extra essay won’t reveal a side you that hasn’t already been shown by MIT’s excellent essay prompts.

^It’s not uncommon for people to submit a supplemental essay that doesn’t fit one of MIT’s prompts. I mean, I truly don’t know how much it helps in general, but I don’t think it’s problematic in any way to send an additional essay that you like.

Chris has been saying that fax is the preferred submission method for supplemental material, because the fax machine they have will automagically turn any submitted material into a PDF. Snail mail is also okay. Sending by email is not generally encouraged.

As with all supplemental material, it can be turned in after the deadline. I would advise getting it in ASAP to make sure it’s read with the rest of your application.
