Supplemental Essay Question

I submitted the Pre-Ap back in august or something. There was not an upload box or anything that indicated that I should upload the supplemental essay. And, now, for the CommonApp, Middlebury does not have an additional supplement other than the Pre-Ap.
So...

Do we mail in our supplemental essay?

yes. Along with a recent graded analytical essay

Yeah-snail mail. God, if Midd weren't so perfect, I would definitely not apply. They need to get their act together because their supplements and such are really annoying.

OK, so hold on, let me get this straight. I've completed and submitted the Pre-App, so now I have to...

submit the Common App
submit my school report stuff
submit the analytical paper and my supplement essay

Is that right? What about the link to the paper supplement that's online on their website? Do I have to snail mail that, too, or is that basically just the Pre-App in paper form?

This is exasperating. I'm so confused!

You've already paid, right? then yeah, that's what you have to do.
"This is exasperating. I'm so confused!"- Word; Middlebury is making a grave mistake by making the process so complex because there are kids who use it as a back up for the Ivies who end up going there because they don't get into the Ivies the thought they would be accepted at. So they'll instead use Wesleyan, Tufts, Bowdin, etc. Middlebury is sacrificing great students.

Well, since I'm not an Ivy-hopeful, I guess I should be grateful that better students than I are being turned away by the complicated admissions process...silver linings? :)

can we dispel this myth that Midd is a back up for the Ivies? Maybe for HYP, but Cornell? Brown? Dartmouth? There are plenty of kids who get into those schools, but not Midd. If I remember correctly, Princeton review lists Middlebury as being more difficult to get into than Dartmouth, Cornell, and Penn.

oh, well. i wish midd had just made another online supplement other than the off-site preapp. it's a bit overly confusing... there will be people who dont submit the supp essay or critical essay because the instructions arn't on the common app, but those are people who dont deserve to go to midd anyways...so ...it all works out :)

and are the supplemental essay and critical essay due dec. 15th together?

First off, applications to Middlebury are up 12% so far this year (for ED I), so clearly they're not losing applicants to other schools because of how "complex" the application process is. Secondly, if you can't follow simple directions, then you certainly wouldn't be able to handle the work at Midd.

yeah.. when are the supplemental essay and critical essay due?

Amen Arcadia!

Arcadia, you beat me to it. If you can't figure out the app form or are not motivated enough to work through it, Middlebury probably doesn't want you.

Middlebury is an awesome school and I'd love to go there, although I'm really doubtful about my admissions chances, so I'm more than a little stressed out. That led to the complaining about the Middlebury application process, which is a bit irregular with the supplementary stuff. Sorry if that offended you all.

esopterodactyl, I don't know about that date. I don't remember the website being specific about that part, but I'll look again.

It's still really annoying, even with what Arcadia and laxtaxi said. I also doubt that Middlebury is doing it to weed out students who can't read directions, and even if application are up, it's making me personally slightly unhappy with the application process at Middlebury. Honestly, if they're going to put me through that much trouble and bureaucratic stuff, they're probably going to have the same pointless frills to things if I go there. I think how you apply to a school is an indicator of what they're like, and I'm not appreciating how Middlebury is handling me right now.

Oh telianathegreat, college is not going to be good for you. Middlebury is regularly listed among "school(s) [that] run like butter" in Princeton Review. If a school that runs that smoothly is "that much trouble" or too "bureaucratic" for you then maybe college just isn't for you. Good luck.

Haha, urbanslaughter.
I'm just theorizing.

I will say, however, that the fact that you have to have your pre-application in (and pay the app fee) by December 15 (the ED release date) makes me think that they are a back up for Ivy. While son has essays pretty well underway etc, I'd like to hear back from the ED school before I start dishing out between 60 and 75 a school in application fees.

Telianathegreat, Hats off to you! Seriously, at least you've been able to maintain your sense of humor during all this.

Modadunn, not sure I follow your logic, but you're free to have your own opinions.

Urban.. who is paying your application fees?

Logic is this: If my son gets accepted ED to his first choice on or before Dec 15 (which is not middlebury) and I have already paid between 60 and 75 in fees to all the other schools he has on his list just to say he MIGHT apply, then I am out several hundred dollars in fees to schools to which he will never apply.

Follow the logic now? Or are you one of those kids who thinks money grows on trees and your trust fund will never depreciate?
