Supplemental Essay

Since Yale's supplemental essay is an extension of the Common App's short answer question, is it proper to take most, if not all, of the exact sentences from the short answer and use them in the long essay?

You could do it, but I would strongly advise you not to. Since the person who reads your essay will have read the short answer, there is no need to repeat the information. Take advantage of the essay to elaboratethe affect of the experience. If in the short answer you describe the experience, use the essay to talk about how it has affected you (your life and your opinions) or mention anything about the experience that you didn't mention in the short answer.

Keep in mind that those two questions can be on different topics.

Really? They can be on different topics? Are you sure? Hmm...

Yes, according to the Yale website.

Where on the website? And how did I not catch that before?

**The Admissions Office has received a number of questions about whether this essay must be written on the same topic selected for the Short Answer question of the Common Application. The answer is no. It is permissible to write the Supplementary Essay on any interest or activity that is important to you.

Ah. Now I feel dumb.
