Anybody in supplemental housing or used to be? Can you provide any information on it? I know that I go check in at the same place as everyone else, just don't know about my roommates and what exactly to expect.

I’m in supplemental housing in Jester East right now. I either got lucky, or they paired me up pretty well with my roommates. We’re all in the same general age range, and we all have somewhat similar majors. All the furniture is movable, although since there’s four of you it might take some work to find a setup that works. There’s two bunk beds, and the top bunk can be a pain to get in and out of, put sheets on, and make up in the morning. I personally don’t really care all that much, but I suggest getting to the room asap so you can claim a bottom bunk if you can. In my room there’s no thermostat control, so we’re at the mercy of whatever UT decides the temp should be. uhhh, ours came with 4 chest of drawers, 2 love seats, and a chair. The 4 desks are the kind of desks that one would study at, and not necessarily use a desktop computer on, although laptops seem to work fine because of the fewer wires involved. If you have a lot of electronics, I highly suggest a power strip/surge protector. Bring a long ethernet cable just in case because the internet ports are kind of scattered around the room. There’s 2 closets, so hope the person you share a closet with doesn’t have a lot of stuff :P. There’s also only one microwave and mini-fridge, which I can see becoming an issue for certain people. A big plus is that these rooms are quit a bit roomier than normal dorm rooms, so you won’t feel as boxed in.

That’s all I can think of for now. Feel free to ask me any questions you have.

Edit: To be more specific about the size, last semester I had a friend who lived in a double in duren, and not counting his private bathroom, I’d say my room is about twice as large.

Jeptha, thanks for the in depthness, much more informative than that little blurb they have on the housing website. I hope my roommate situation works out similar to yours. Thanks for the tip about the Ethernet cable! Durig orientation I stayed on the 4th floor of jester east. The room was pretty big in my opinion with the two beds, but glad to hear the supplemental is roomier. Is there anything in particular I should bring specifically for supplemental housing or do the rooms provide everything a normal dorm offers. I’m thinking I might bring a clothing rack bc I have a lot and a little closet to share might not be enough! Thanks again

And if we signed up for resnet, do they give us the wire connection when we check in? Or are we sposed to bring our own for faster internet connection? I’m okay with using wireless

I’m in supplemental and they haven’t told me where I’m living yett!

Bunk bedss? Ahh, hopefully I can get a bottom bed. I’m checking in tomorrow at 9:00 am.

Soniya, I’m getting there tomorrow at 8 and am hoping for a bottom bunk and close vicinity to outlets!

My daughter was in supplemental housing in Jester last year. There were 4 girls in a very large study lounge. They were offered regular rooms shortly after the semester started, but asked to stay in the room together as they all got along well. (One is her roommate this year as well.)
The desks were small, but they had a very large round table in the room also. They had a small dresser each and the top drawer can be locked if you bring a lock.
The 2 closets seemed to work fine for them.
There is a window in the door, so you will need to cover that. We used Command hooks and a cute dishtowel - cheap and easy!
It is what you make of it. They chose to see it as fun and a unique experience.

flatxca, that’s what I’ve heard…that people tend to stay in supplemental throughout the year. It’s also cheaper; I’m excited to have 3 roommates!

Haha I’m driving from Houstonn so I will probably leave super early so I can get in line and check in early!

Where do we park our cars when we check in at the Disch-Falk Field? I have no idea how the process of moving in is going to work…

I originally went to jester west to check in, and they sent me to jester east, so I don’t think you need to go to wherever that field is to check in. and they didn’t give me anything besides my key and bathroom code when I checked in. I just plugged into one of the ports and opened my web browser, and it all kind of worked itself out. as far as closets go, it really depends on how much you and your roommates bring. the closets seem to be normal sized closets (not walk-ins). to be safe, it might be a good idea to bring a clothing rack. I personally got lucky with the roommate I’m sharing my closet with because he didn’t bring enough to need the closet, so I get it all to myself.

My room doesn’t have locks on the drawers, and we don’t have a table, so it seems like furnishings are pretty random. and you don’t really need to worry THAT much about closeness to ports/outlets because you can move all the furniture around. if that sounds like too much hassle to you though, I can always come up and help with that because I’ve been bored out of my mind since tuesday, lol.

as far as stuff to bring… hmmm… well, I suggest a bath robe, because the restrooms have no reliable place to put clean/dirty clothes besides a single hook next to the shower (at least that’s how the men’s restrooms are). i guess a flashlight for navigating the room while everyone is sleeping. a roll of quarters for cleaning your clothes if you want to conserve your bevo bucks. i’ll add more if I think of any.

A closet extender, a fan (the room does not have its own thermostat control)

Having more roommates does have advantages in that you meet even more people quickly when you add in all of their friends.

Last year I was assigned a supplemental space in San Jac, but I only had one other roommate. It was pretty neat, because our room was as large as a study lounge, so we had a lot of space and a nice view of the stadium. San Jac also has private baths for the regular dorm rooms, so my roommate and I had a key for the restroom and shower room (one room with one toilet and sink and another room with one bathtub) that was right outside of our lounge. We had to walk out and unlock it when we wanted to use it because it wasn’t connected to our lounge, but only we had the key to it, and we didn’t even have to clean it. I would say it would get cleaned at least every 3 days or so because it was technically a public restroom.

We also got refunded about 10% (or however much is refunded for staying supplemtal) for the payments we made while staying there up until they offered us a regular room and we decided to stay in the lounge instead for the entire year.

Did you still get the 10% discount for the entire year even though you were offered a permanent room but decided to stay in the supplemental room?

After they offered me a normal room but I decided to stay they stopped refunding me the 10%
