supplemental material after deadline??

My son clicked "submit" on his 10th and final app on Jan. 15. Yay!! Then he had his final creative writing project to do. He decided to tape everything he'd written for the class on to CD. As he's a drama guy who also does poetry slams, this was actually like a performance of his work and I was really impressed by it. It occurred to me immediately that this might make him stand out from the crowd of applicants and could also bring him more to life for the ad com. But is it too late or is this over-kill?

I will of course check the admissions websites of all the schools to see if this is addressed. And I would run it by his GC and his Creative Writing teacher (or suggest son do so) before suggesting he send something in, but I'm curious about the experience/opinions of CC'ers on this. Thanks.

It wouldn't hurt to submit it. Could you have him email me an mp3 of it?

It's fine to submit something a few days after the deadline, IF the college welcomes or accepts supplemental material -- most college apps won't be reviewed until the midyear report is available in any case -- and its typical for piece of the app, like test scores & rec letters, to trickle in late.

But I wouldn't suggest sending a CD of EVERY thing son has written for the class.... the ad coms are busy people. My daughter wanted to highlight her interest in dance choreography, so she submitted samples of a couple of her works on DVD -- they were long pieces with a lot of dancers, but she edited it down to a DVD with less than 3 minutes of overall time. It was nicely done -- quite professional looking -- but the real key is that it was short. I mean, I think ad coms are smart enough to get the idea pretty quickly. So if he does it, he may want to simply transfer a short segment onto a second CD. Label it clearly, including an indication of running time......

Thanks,

I was thinking just two or three poems, not everything. I just checked the admissions websites of all the colleges. A couple have forms for supplemental material, but none that would cover poetry reading. The closest is Pomona's for "theatre". The rest don't mention supplements at all.

I think I remember in the book, "Winning the Heart of the College Admissions Dean" that the author says it's ok to send in supplements (if they're good, obviously) after deadline. I'm not always objective about my son's work, so I'd want other opinions.

originaloog

I'll ask him. At this point, it's still in the hands of his teacher being graded. Though he'd make a new, shorter copy anyway.
