I would really like to submit a supplemental essay to Caltech -- I think it explains why I love science and what I get out of science very well, which I think is important to share with Caltech. May I?

On the subject of supplemental materials, I am considering sending an extra letter of recommendation (from my research mentor) and including transcripts from some non-math/science academic summer programs I attended. Again, may I?

Yes, on both counts. This will be useful information. But do remember there is a limit on what it is practical to expect us to read. Beyond about the equivalent of what you are planning to send, too many supplementary materials are a minus. But an extra essay and an extra letter of recommendation -- especially if they cast extra light on your application -- are fine.

I have a related question. If my response to the second essay question quite exceeds the word limit,is it better for me to leave it or take the extra content out and put it in a supplemental essay?
