After searching through the application, I noticed that they never prompt the applicant to submit supplemental essays/recommendations. Is this implied that you may do so, or do they not allow it? If it matters, I'm applying to the School of Engineering..thanks a lot! =)

They don't encourage supplemental materials. You should only send in additional stuff if it's absolutely necessary(i.e. if it's a central part of your application). If you absolutely have to send in supplemental recommendations/essays, you should mail them to the office of undergraduate admission. The received documents won't appear on the online tracker though; you have to call them up to verify the documents have been received.

If, say, you have a low GPA because you work 40 hours a week to support your family, include a recomendation from your church minister that talks of how altruism and hard work are fundamental to your chracter. Or perhaps one from your employer explaining how you study/do homework on your breaks. But! if the supplemental material does not serve to elucidate some 'fault' in an otherwise steller application, (aka: really serious EC like 40 h/w job) absolutely do not send anything. Make EVERY word, every period, and moment you put into your application count. Make it serve a purpose. These people know BS, and they deffinitely don't have time for it, so don't give it to them. That's just my oppinion, but I'm sure there are others.

a lot of the other schools has a spot to submit a research abstract, what about Columbia? do they want that?

google2008: I sent in an abstract; they ask that you make it brief if you send it in(specifically a page or less; not the whole paper).

I read the directions for supplemental materials repeatedly to make sure I didn't break any rules or something and while it doesn't seem like they're eager to receive supplemental materials, I sent in a CD anyways because I wrote about music in my essay and I figured that was pertinent. I wanted to send in a couple of abstracts as well but didn't want to risk it.

mikesown, did you just send the abstract by itself? no cover page?

Ok thanks, because I have one essay that I've been using for every college that i've applied to because its probably the most important part about me, however, I would also like to send an essay & an extra recommendation that shows a different aspect of my personality you would not be able to get from the application. If its not really encouraged, should I not send either, or maybe just the recommendation?

Is it okay to send in a Resume? I have done a lot of activities outside of school that I cannot explain on my application ( summer programs, research etc) and I think that the resume would spell it out easier. I have tried to use the application the best way I can, but all of it doesn't fit, and my other jobs and stuff is pretty important. Should I submit a resume?

My application focused on their new creative writing major and so I included a 10-page poetry portfolio with my application. I guess it worked!
