Hi there,
I’m currently a junior looking to apply to yale next year. I’m interested in doing a general biology degree, but I also love fashion and am interested in minoring in applied art history - I have an extensive collection of handmade clothes I’ve made over the years, including some high fashion pieces and school show pieces.
I was wondering would it be better to submit it as a link on the “additional information” section of the Common app so i have more space / flexibility or a supplementary arts portfolio? The only problem with the link I’ve heard there’s less attention paid to it and fashion is a huge part of who I am; on the other hand, a suppl art limits me to 5-8 pieces (what do I do with the rest??)
Would appreciate some help :")
Hi chellex, by no means am I someone who extensively about college admissions, but I do have experience with artistic supplementary materials. Typically with art submissions for any college they would have you submit it on an external site (ex. Slideroom) but I would check for any colleges other than Yale. I don’t know if you should submit it as a link–I would probably advise against it because the admissions committee are not the ones who look at your art, rather it’s the art professors there.
Note, the people who submit supplements are usually of national or international caliber (although it’s difficult to state the level for fashion/art). Here’s an excerpt from their Slideroom Arts Portfolio details:
“Whether or not you wish to major in art as an undergraduate, if you are an advanced visual artist you may consider submitting an art portfolio as part of your application to Yale. In deciding whether or not to do this, please bear in mind that it is Yale School of Art faculty members who will review selected portfolios, not admissions officers. You should only consider submitting work if your artwork is a strong and important part of your application and demonstrates a high level of ability for a high school artist. You should limit the work submitted to between 5 and 8 pieces, which should include at least one drawing.”
5-8 pieces should be an accurate representation of your artistry–if you still aren’t sure, I would call the admissions office and inquire about your supplement situation.
Best of luck to you!
