Supplementary letters of recommendation - OK for deferrees?

On Yale's FAQ (Applying to Yale College | Frequently Asked Questions | Office of Undergraduate Admissions) they say you shouldn't really send them supplementary letters of recommendation, but you can if you want. It seems like they would get annoyed if you sent a third letter before they even reviewed your app the first time, but do you think they would mind it if you sent a third letter/compilation of teacher comments if you were deferred? Thanks

I would only send one if it’s going to be something totally different than what’s already represented. If you just send one more teacher rec that basically confirms the same things, they would probably get annoyed. However, if it really says something you feel needs to get across, go ahead and send it.

The problem is I never saw my two teacher recs. I saw my teacher comments from the first grading period this year though so I thought I could send those but I won’t know if they are repetitive. They would be all new teachers though…

Have you done anything in this 3rd class that really stands out? Have you shown a particular quality that your other two teachers wouldn’t know about? If yes, then you could send in that extra letter. A better option would be taking a rec from your employer, coach, etc. who are more likely to see dimensions of you that wouldn’t typically be expressed in the classroom.

I would doubt it will make a significant impact unless this supplementary rec gives something totally new and really can have some weight.

But in that case, you probably would’ve wanted to send it before the EA deadline.

i agree with giraffez to a point…it needs to be something new and meaningful, BUT…you can send it now. you are deferred, which means your folder is being re-evaluated. new info is fine as long as it is not more of the same.

Another teacher rec is more of the same.

I said letter of recommendation to be general and helpful for other students, but I was specifically thinking of sending a copy of my trimester report which has comments from all of my teachers (including one from my art teacher which would be a new for Yale) as well as my advisor (which is one of my teachers).

I thought maybe if I don’t send the whole thing I could quote sections?

Edit: Also, I didn’t send it for EA because I only got the report like a week before the EA results came out so even if I sent it then they weren’t going to change their decision. I thought saving it for now, when they re-review it, would be better.
