Supplementary Rec - can I read it?

I got an "evaluation letter" about my performance at a program this summer. I want to send it in as a supplementary recommendation, but people have told me that the rec letters have to be sealed (?!) and addressed directly to the college (but the letter I have is addressed to me).

Obviously, I haven't read the contents of the evaluation letter, so I don't know what it says inside ... but I'm pretty sure that it's a good, (not generic), rec.

Short question: can I use a supplementary rec that is not directly addressed to the college?

Yes, you can read it. Supplementary rec letters like this are often not sealed and sent directly because often the student has only one copy and wants to send it to several schools. Because of that, it is fine to send a copy and not the actual original.

Before you send it, try to verify whether your schools will accept and consider supplementary recommendations. Many won’t.
