Im currently on my last essay and the question is essentially "why Columbia?". This is my dream school and I want this essay to be perfect. When I think of why I want to go, my initial thoughts are NYC and the core......but those are what everyone is going to write about. They are my honest reasons for wanting to go there and I'm worried if I use them, my essay won't stand out. Does anyone have any advice about this?
Thank You!

Write about why they’re meaningful to you specifically? I don’t want to sound too cliched, like “be yourself” but just accentuate exactly what attracts YOU to the core and NYC since theoretically everyone’s reasons should be different. Do you like the core because you’ve always had a passion for the Great Books? Or because you’ve always been more math & science oriented and you’re excited to broaden your academic horizons? Do you like NYC because you’re interested in business and you want to be near Wall Street? Or because you’re a theatre major that wants access to all of the cultural events and Broadway? Obviously, elaborate past that a tad, but hopefully this helps somewhat.

I also wrote about NYC and the Core, but I wrote about what was unique about NYC and the Core. NYC is like any other big city, but I wrote about how my area is very diverse and staying in a diverse part of the nation was important to me, and how NYC and Columbia both fit the bill, and I wrote how the Core would help me become a well-read person.

My advice is to put a spin on it!! Pick one thing about the city that makes NYC and Columbia unique from other schools.
