Supplements

Hi y’all,
I’m applying to MIT this fall and will be submitting supplements. Got 1 questions:

  1. ATM I’m submitting a music supplement - I’m definitely submitting my composition, but not sure whether I should also submit a recording as a performer. I personally value my compositions over performing (because, you know, you can play a song through practice but not so much of composing); but I’m quite decent in piano and want to include that too. I mostly play Chopin and Beethoven (I don’t take lessons and that’s one of the things I’m emphasizing in my application; to repertoire standards I’m somewhere around grade 10 or 11), but since I learn pieces on my own it’s not concert-perfect (I miss few notes here and there). Still worth submitting performance portfolio?

  2. I didn’t seriously think about Maker portfolio until now, I have some programs I coded that I want to include (I spend a significant amount of my time doing that) but not sure whether my programs are “cool enough” or something like that. Some of them include graphical user interface (GUI) but some are just command line interfaces (CLI). Below is a list of my completed programs that I’m thinking about:

GUI:

  • Encoder/decoder (this was a full project; I have very detailed documentations for this and this is the only project with documentations)
  • Few simple games

CLI: (they’re mostly made to do my homework)

  • Molar mass calculator
  • Quadratic equation solver

I also have many programs still in progress, including a Schedule manager program (aka Stalker program), graphical version of Molar mass calculator, and more games (Tetris, 2048, etc). I didn’t have time to go back to them.

Not sure whether my programs sound good enough for the Maker portfolio, but I feel like I want to emphasize how I love programming…because I really do and that’s what my service project (which I’m writing about in my essay) is about.

Let me know what you think!

Definitely submit both supplements. They can only help. If you’re playing the piano at a tenth grade level, you shouldn’t worry about the performance part of it. The people viewing it will keep in mind that you’re a composer. Good luck.

@brassratter Thank you! Do you think I should also submit my Maker portfolio as well?

Yes, submit that also.
