Supplements

If I am uploading my supplements as word documents instead of pasting them in the boxes they provide, is it okay if one or two of them go over 1,000 characters slightly? (say, 1,051). Are they really going to go through and count my characters? Thanks for your help.

Don’t you HAVE to paste them into the box they provide? i don’t see a button to upload the documents…am i missing something?

pfsh, all of mine were (slightly) over 1,000 char (and I got in), so don’t worry.

dinorawr, there’s a file upload option on commonapp online, which I suggest people use to preserve formatting.

thanks ch0c0lat3! what a relief

Oh let me clarify a little. I said this on one of the ED threads a while ago (if you have time, you can look through them to see if anyone answered your other questions!).

When I asked one of the admissions officers about supplement length, she said the idea was to be concise. They are looking for “about five to six sentences” but she added that if you need those few extra sentences in order to capture the essence of You, go ahead and put them in!

1,000 characters is just a guideline. My supplements all went over, the longest being the Why Barnard? essay at 1,700ish (from what I remember). My CommonApp essay was very very short, though, so perhaps it was a safe compromise? I felt the supplement was the strongest part of my app.

Anyway, I hope that helped. If you have any other questions, I’d be happy to help. I’m not a current student, but and ED admit.

Good luck to you!
