Supplies for specific OSU dorms

Don’t know if there’ll be enough posts to make this useful but if anyone would like to list non-obvious items that students will need for specific dorms and specific items that won’t work, I think it could be helpful.

I’ll start. At Houck and Taylor (plus other North campus dorms with same room set-up), you need some kind of Master lock for the lock drawer plus closet organizers like 1-2 set(s) of plastic drawers or hanging closet shelves for sweaters/shoes or a hanging rod doubler. The closets aren’t deep (20") and they are doorless and narrow. There are few drawers and they are smallish. In a quad, you might only get one dresser drawer for your student depending on how the kids want to divide up the space. Plan accordingly. The chairs at Houck aren’t cushioned so a seat cushion is nice. There are drop-ceilings in Houck so those floor-to-ceiling tension rods with shelves don’t work. Our wireless printer did not work wirelessly so DS plugs it in as needed. He likes his printer but there is so much free printing available on campus that you may not want to bother bringing a printer. That’s all I can think of for now.

D is in for a shock when she realizes she can’t bring her entire wardrobe, which is extensive, regardless of what dorm she lives in. She is hoping for south campus. I think a refrigerator and microwave comes with all rooms now, right? I hope others post on the dorms they are aware of - thanks for starting this!

Yep- I think all the dorms have a microwave and refirgerator. From what I have seen, girls do tend to bring more clothing than boys. IMHO- in a quad, you only have room for 2 weeks of clothing/shoes/underwear plus a some outerwear/layers if you don’t want to be stomping all over everyone’s stuff because it is all over & crammed everywhere.

dd lives in Siebert on South Campus. Rooms are small but lots of storage space. My dd was actually freaking out about bringing too much! Beds lofted…no need for curtains. You’ll get a rug order from residence hall group…whatever the dimension suggested was, we should have picked the smaller size. They dump the rolled rug in your room and it took us an hour to put it down under the furniture! She really loves having wall-to-wall, makes room cosy and nice for overnight guests. Make sure your roomie is not arriving the same half of day you are…can’t imagine moving in if 2-3 more people were doing the same thing in the same small space. Rooms get hotter the farther up you are in the building…dd kept window open year round only shut during Xmas break. We finally bought one of those double exchange fans at home depot for $25 and that is the only thing that helped cool their room. We bought a tall skinny shelf at Ikea so she could have a place to put alarm clock, glasses, etc and also a TV cart with drawer and shelf for food, dishes. Comfy Butterfly chair also much appreciated. New TV’s don’t have right wire for connecting to older cable outlet in room which was the only thing we had to run out and buy that day from Radio Shack on high street. Remember you might be the roomie farther away from outlets so may want shorter and longer cords depending on where you end up. Dd was an OWL (Ohio State Welcome Leader) which meant move-in three days before the main day, which was really nice to do as she was anxious to be at school and nice to settle in. One dad in her hall spent the day ■■■■■■■■ high street for best deals on books while mom and girl unpacked! may think of more…

ddd928 - this was really helpful; D is hoping to get into Siebert! I lived in Stradley next door years ago, so I remember that great storage. Was there a place to put the TV in the room or you had to bring that? Also did you have to buy a specific wire or a TV at Radio Shack? Where’d you get the butterfly chair? D is already nagging for one of those.

Guess you could put TV on desk or filing cabinet also but this way it was out from under the beds so both girls could watch. We bought TV at Best Buy but cable it came with wouldn’t connect into the wall cable connection…older version, hubby knew exactly what to get. Butterfly chair from Bed Bath and Beyond during their dorm supply time in late summer but Target had one too. She likes having a soft chair as misses having her bed at regular level and her room was so hot she could barely sleep up high much less study there! If you go to housing.osu.edu/halls.asp, then click on the hall name and you can find a floor plan, room dimensions, closet space, etc. for each dorm.

dd also suggested those 3M sticky back hooks in both small and heavy duty sizes…hooks of all kinds, really. We bought a plastic over-the-door with 4 hooks that we placed over one of the ladder rungs of her bunk and she used for her towels and shower cover. Also loves her wonder hangers!

Thanks to all the posters for their advice. Anyone familiar with Halloran (North) Are they quads or doubles? How is the closet space- DS has tons of clothes!

I am pretty sure Halloran is a quad.

Halloran has doubles and quads but freshman generally get the quads. The layout is like Houck. In fact, Halloran is part of the HBH group (Houck Barrett Halloran) although I am not sure what they are grouped for except getting mail sorted at Barrett. If you go to housing.osu.edu you can click on room search and from there check out specific dorms and rooms. You can get room dimensions and a list of the dorm amenities if that helps.

Someone asked about supplies for Lincoln on another thread - Don’t know much about it but from what we saw touring, several of the suites had a futon sofa in the common room. It also looked to me like the common room could use a coat tree.

Hi can anybody post information about quads at Norton House. Storage space size, Is it hot in the rooms? What items a freshman should bring? Can anybody post pictures of the room’s wardrobes, drawers and desk area? Is there enough room to put a tall towel tower in the bathroom? I have seen the layout of the room, but would like a better visual idea of storage space. We live in Florida and would like to be be able to plan ahead as much as we can before our student moves in the fall.

For west campus (the towers):

You need a fan because it gets hot during the night when they turn down the AC. If your in a double you can loft your bed and put a futon under it for more space for friends. Wireless printers wont work so have a cord. Also, Xbox live will not work without an ethernet cord for any dorms. If you and your roomate want a TV then bring a splitter because there is only one cable jack. Most importantly, bring some sort of air freshener because it will start to smell eventually in your common room.

Hi everyone! Does anyone know if we can loft beds at any time during the year? Also, does Mack Hall’s double have a lot of storage space? I mean I know it won’t be A Lot, but I was just wondering; and what are corridor baths like?

Does anyone know what the storage situation is like in Res on 10th. I know their are closets in each bedroom, but I’ve only been in the rooms once. I thought I saw some kind of dresser built into the wall between the beds, but I’m not sure. Is their room to put storage under the beds? I also have a set of risers for the bed, just about 6in or so, would these work? Thanks for the help

@ebop27 - I’m actually wondering about this too. I’ve been in Res 2 times, and only once have I visited the rooms, and I’ve kind of forgotten what the set up is, aside from what the OSU pdf showed haha.

@ebop27 - Okay I’ve moved into OSU early, and the beds are already raised fairly high. I’m in the room corresponding with the letter C, and there are two closets divided with a bookshelf-type-thing. At the bottom of the bookshelf is a compartment to that can be locked. I think I have one of the oddball rooms, though, because A and B each have two of the bookshelf/closet complexes, and it is sort of separated from the rest of the bedroom. I feel like the room I’m in was meant to be a super-single, but honestly I think it’s plenty of space either way (especially since I was in a quad in Lincoln last year haha). Each person gets two drawers for the sinks, which I think is nice.

Houck dorm room-does the desk have drawers designed for hanging files? I can’t remember! And what fits between the two bunk beds? Is there already a bedside table (because where do alarm clocks go?!) or filing cabinet there? Can four (two per child) under-bed storage boxes fit? Thanks!

My son is moving this Sat to Lincoln quad :frowning:
Does he need a small rug in bed area? Desk area? Cushion for desk chair? Fan? Curtain? Light other than desk light? Storage shelves? (We got a 4 drawers plastic unit)

I’ll be in Neil this fall. Anyone know what to expect? What kind of storage space will I be dealing with?
