My son is admitted at Northeastern and BU in Engineering. Concerned where he will likely have the most support structure in place (faculty advisors, etc) to help him be successful.

Does anyone have any feel for how much support there is at NEU? And how BU compares?

And is there any free time when you're NOTstudying? He's interested in EE.

I was in the same boat a couple of years ago. It came down to NU vs. BU for engineering for me as well. I chose NU, and I’m currently a sophomore mechanical engineer.

I think support services here are great, especially for freshman. My academic and co-op advisors are awesome. There’s also Engineering Student Services (220 Snell). They great at answering any questions or helping you register for classes. They also offer free tutoring for all freshman engineering courses.

You also take a 1 credit “Intro to Engineering” course taught by your academic advisor freshman year. Its a good chance for you and your advisor to get to know each other and for you to learn about all the college has to offer.

If you do decide to come to NU, you might was to consider living on the all engineering floor in Stetson-West (that’s where I lived last year). Everyone is in the same intro engineering classes. It great for forming study groups or doing homework. Both RA’s are also engineers so they’re awesome at answering any specific questions you may have.

As for free time… Engineering very time consuming and there’s a pretty big workload, but you’ll still have plenty of free time. Key is just to budget your time well.
