Hi, Im a Junior male track athlete, and I was wondering if I only could get support from 1 coach, the coach I'm applying to with my early decision choice. Is it possible to get support from a coach Early Action, and which schools would allow me to do that? I have a 3.8 gpa, 2190 SAT score, and I run the 100 meter in 11.4, 200 meter in 23.4.

So, just to be clear - ED is binding, EA is not - you’re asking if you have to go ED to get coach support?

No, coaches support kids as EA applicants and even in the RD round. Of course, most coaches are going to strongly encourage you to go ED (if that is an option). Just be really careful before pulling the trigger on ED - there many tales of woe of supported (or so they thought) athletes that played their one-and-only ED card only to be denied.

Varska, Should the athlete ask for a likely letter (in case the school is an Ivy) when deciding whether to apply EA or ED? If the coach says a ‘Likely’ will be assigned, that tells you how strong the coach’s support truly is. If he refuses an LL or gives a reason you can not get one, the athlete should be more wary, correct? And maybe consider other schools, programs?

Also, in terms of timing, if the OP decides to apply ED or EA, could he submit application Oct. 1 and get the likely in the next couple of weeks, before the deadline to apply ED or EA to other schools. Then if the LL did not come through he could apply elsewhere?

My S is being recruited too and we are trying to figure out what, if anything, the current dialogue means and how dependable it is. It seems that the ‘tales of woe’ you refer to should be able to be mitigated somewhat by asking the right direct questions, but maybe not. And I do realize that Admissions Committee admits (coaches don’t), but presumably with academic pre-reads and knowledgeable, experienced coaches, the chance of being blind-sided should be reduced.

^ in the case of the ivies…your student will know if he/she is a top recruited after July and a full pre-read from admissions (requested by the coach)
AND if he/she gets an OV…
The coach will bring in as many as 3x as many athletes as LL slots.
At the OV the coach may discuss things with your student re where they are on the list and how many LLs they have to offer.
Have ALL of the apps ready to go (to push submit) --
