UVA is my first choice but im afraid ive been forced to languish on the waitlist... what should i do? anything?

like your screen name, I'm samesies. and ticked off.

yea I'm so lost

I'm in this group, too---but I had expected to be rejected, so I can't say I'm disappointed or didn't expect it. At least now I won't have a tough decision to make--which I would have had I gotten in.

I heard last year over 4,000 people were waitlisted.

I was waitlisted too:( I feel terrible

new addition to the waitlist group

im in the same boat as NJfan. I was pretty much expecting to get rejected, even though i did get my hopes up a little bit. On the bright side, my insanely difficult college choice isnt anymore difficult, at least as of now. Even though UVA was my #1 choice, im totally okay with being waitlisted as all the other schools i have gotten in are reputable.

Heres a tip to anyone rejected/waitlisted (it helped me)- just keep thinking about all the negatives of UVA (according to your standards) so you'll be kind of happy you're not going, whether it's the size, the massive amount of greek life, the cost (oos), the level of difficulty, if its too urban/country, bad dorms, bad food, no cars on campus freshman year, too many preps, or whatever random reasons you think of

and hey...at least we werent rejected. We're the best of the crappy people!

Also I hate to be a downer but for those you waitlisted, count your losses and move on. There is only like ~10% of being accepted off the wl.

Remember: 4000 kids may have been wait-listed. But only somewhere around 1000 accepted. That's the more important number.

Wait, if you accept another college's offer, but also the waitlist spot at UVA, and then you get accepted at UVA, you can go there instead? I just need some clarification.

?? Sorry to be dense, but I'm not understanding your post Shoebox?

I have a feeling that the yield is going to lower this year, as UVA makes the transition to evaluating all applicants in RD. My best advice for those waitlisted is to update the office with your stats, and write a letter to the committee explaining them why you would be a good fit for UVA, and how interested you are in attending the school. Do it by post/email.

barbosa: wouldnt the yield be higher if anything. Think about it, if there are a bunch of kids who know they want to go to UVA, they would have applied ED if they could have. However since there is only RD, all the dedicated ED kids were forced to apply RD. Does that make sense or am i just high?

i would also like to know the answer to arvandm's question

The answer to arvandm's question is "yes". That's about the only situation in which one can accept a college offer of admission and then back out. I'm fairly certain on this, but if someone has information to counter, please speak up, just to have all the facts correct.
Dean J would know for sure--how about it, Dean J?

Lol, being waitlisted sucks.

By chance, are any of you also members of mychances.net? I see a whole bunch of new red dots to indicate rejections for UVa... I'm one of them now, too, I guess, since being waitlisted is practically the same thing.

Of course I'll write a letter, but I doubt that it will do much.

I heard that this is the season of waitlisting... I was waitlisted at 2 of my other schools, one of which I thought was a sure thing. It was kind of a shock. Hm, I guess I should've applied to more than 5 schools, but whatever.

yeah honestly i would have rather been rejected. At least i wouldnt have this 3% chance of lingering hope floating over my head

afro, students who would like to have early decision as an option will flock to other schools that still have ED/EA in place. Because of the elimination of ED, UVA will be careful not to overadmit, so they will anticipate a lower yield rate. They'll take students off the waitlist, which will significant be larger this year, to match the past years' yield rates.

ohhhhh i see

An update from http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/

The waitlist at UVa is quite large. In the past, this has been because there are so many different segments to the population here (CLAS/SEAS/SARS/NURS for both VA and OOS students). On top of that, there are always students with great stats that don't warrant a denial, but who we can't fit in the offer pool. And on top of all of that, this year was our first year without an early application program. As a result, we don't exactly know how our yield (the number of students who accept our offer of admission) will look this year.

About 3,000 students were offered a spot on the waitlist (the number that actually want a spot will probably be about half of that). There have been years when we've taken 50 students off the waitlist and years when we've taken 150 students off the waitlist. It is very hard to predict how things will work out.

For now, you need to look at your other options and think about which one feels right to you. Some of you will want to hold on and see what happens with the waitlist and others will want to fully invest themselves in another school. Either way, you need to submit a deposit at a school by May 1st to ensure yourself a spot in another school's freshman class. If you are offered a spot in our class and you decide to accept it, you'll have to write to that other school and withdraw your name from the class (you will probably lose your deposit at that school). Just remember that you can't "double deposit".

It may be helpful to look at last year's entry "Notes on the Waitlist" and a later one that contained questions from waitlisted students. Feel free to direct questions to me and stay tuned over the weekend for replies. Also know that your envelope will contain a "Waitlist Frequently Asked Questions" sheet that will answer the most common questions (is the list ranked, what do I do now, what's the time line, etc.).

omg, i feel like we have no chance. i'm getting waitlisted everywhere! where did i go wrong?!?!

I think the really upsetting part to me is the fact that some cheaters that I know got into UVa... and highly qualified, honest applicants did not. I know that I am not as well qualified as some, but there are people on the UVa blog who had almost perfect SAT scores, were consistent with their academic excellence, and still got wait listed. How sad...

UVA admissions made less sense than ever this year.
