Has anyone called the admission office and asked why they were deferred? If you did, did you get a straightforward answer?
my gc called the day after I was deferred and she said that they said that they couldn’t admit me with my Q1 math grades
@Zenithar143 Hmmm okay. They '“couldn’t admit you” is weird wording though…I mean wouldn’t that suggest a rejection? Or did they say they were waiting for your first semester grades?
@Zenithar143 thats rough bro…
@thegrant lmao you have no idea
@BroomOfThought I get what you’re saying. The way my gc worded it felt like I would have a good chance of admittance if my math grades increased but she can be a little cryptic so maybe not. I’m just gonna do the best I can and see what happens
@Zenithar143 - I’m pretty sure the same thing happened to me last year. I had a C in AP Calc AB during my first quarter and that was the only glaring thing about my application that I could recall. Unfortunately, my final grade stayed the same and my midyear report was pretty abysmal. Even so, I was offered a guaranteed transfer in March and will be attending Cornell this fall.
The silver lining in your situation is that you were deferred, not rejected–they saw potential in your application, and that’s why they’re placing you in the RD round. I would definitely try to get your math grade up if possible and to keep the rest of your transcript looking strong, including rigorous second semester courses. If you’re feeling up to it, I’d suggest sending a letter of continued interest to reiterate your enthusiasm in attending.
Best of luck!
Thanks a lot!
Okay, I have to be missing something…
Has Cornell really not released statistics for their ed class of 2019…?
Did anyone else ask their GC to call?
My GC doesn’t really want to. She says they’re probably not gonna tell me anything…I’m not sure if it’s too late to call now because they’re probably too busy with the RD apps.
Many GCs do not want to do any extra work. It is not too late if you could convince your GC to make the call. It is beginning of Jan, they are probably just in the process of having the clerks collate all applications in the system now. I would be very surprised if they have started reading the RD apps. This is the best time to call.
@airspirit Definitely not too late to call! I called on Monday and got an answer on Tuesday. My GC called last semester, but she wasn’t really asking the right questions so I went ahead and called them myself on Monday. If your GC doesn’t want to, I highly suggest calling yourself—its just as efficient. Plus you can ask exactly what you want to.
@oldfort @BroomOfThought Thanks for the replies!
Btw @BroomOfThought did they give you a specific answer by any chance?
@airspirit I don’t really know how to react to what the lady told me, because it could either be her attempt at an indirect yet polite response or the unlikely option–a good sign–but I don’t want to get my hopes up, because I figure she might say this to everyone. Basically when I asked her what exactly it was that got me deferred, she told me that there were a lot of applicants to my major and that they could not admit all of them early, and then went on to say that I had a ‘great application’ and she listed my AP classes, extracurriculars, GPA/scores, and my essays and said to just keep doing what I was doing…
ITS SO UNNERVING AGH I don’t know what to make of it. I really want to know whether other people have been getting direct answers or just the same old insincere replies…
@BroomOfThought, what number did you call?
@BroomOfThought Ikr! Being deferred is the worst.
Well at least they pulled up your specific file, other than the standard insincere reply lol. I would take it as a good sign!
@jamesjunkers I would use the admissions representative phone number: 607-255-5241.
That’s why you should have your GC call. They almost always get better info than the student gets on their own.
@jamesjunkers I think I remember you saying you were a legacy on the ED thread, right? If you got that letter with the page of contact info, that’s what I would use. Also, the number you call depends on the college you applied to. Don’t call the regional rep for admissions to find out why you were deferred, call the admissions office for your college, because they’re the ones with that info.
@BroomOfThought, okay thanks! (and yes to the legacy) .
@jamesjunkers @airspirit If you guys do end up calling, would you let me know if they give you straightforward answers?
@BroomOfThought, I’m probably not calling, but if I do, I’ll def let you know
