Supreme Court nominee John V. Roberts is *doubly* qualified!

He is a graduate of both Harvard College ** and
**Harvard Law School
!!

Yeah... did you notice that Bush also said he worked at the steel mill during summers to help pay for college?

Well Harvard must have been amazingly cheap back then, or he's not from quite as humble beginnings as he's being made out to be.

Candlize - He's reportedly worth nearly 4 million dollars, but I imagine that a successful law career had something to do with that. I imagine that Harvard had financial aid "back then" as well.

That's 6/9 for HLS on the court. I'll have to ask around to confirm, but I don't believe that's ever happened before, with any law school.

And don't forget; the Chief Justice also has a Masters Degree from Harvard, I believe.

And four of the remaining eight have some connections to Stanford, and O'Connor went to SLS.

I'm quite fond of Harvard, but I must say that you can go to HLS and still be an awful judge.

Hanna, you're assuming this guy is going to get confirmed. I hope he doesn't.

Hanna, you're assuming this guy is going to get confirmed. I hope he doesn't.

In all likelihood, he will get confirmed. Something really, really shocking would have to happen for him to not be confirmed.

That's correct. The only question is whether or not he'll be filibustered prior to confirmation. I don't think there's even going to be that much of a fight, but regardless, they'll pretty much have to catch him in bed with a little boy to keep him from being confirmed.

I think they will apply to old standard that he will be confirmed unless they catch him in bed "with a dead woman or a live man".

lol byerly, congrats on having a harvard alum nominated to the supreme court. if bush had as much school pride as you do, that would never happen, lol (as a yalie).

im glad he was nominated, and im glad hes in all likelihood going to be confirmed. Roe v. Wade needs to be...i won't say overturned...reformed.

oh and guess what byerly, i really wanna go to HBS! happy birthday.

lol - Bush went to HBS too...

well i personally don't know much about him, but i would have preferred a more moderate person on the whole conservative/liberal spectrum.

as for roe v wade, i fully support it

and i couldn't care less if he went to harvard or not.

Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is also a graduate of Harvard Business School.

Does Yale College or Harvard Business School want to claim credit for this example of Bush-speak?

The president's accidental wit and wisdom.

"I was going to say he's a piece of work, but that might not translate too well. Is that all right, if I call you a 'piece of work'?"—To Jean-Claude Juncker, prime minister of Luxembourg, Washington, D.C., June 20, 2005

Uh, I think you're being a bit aggressive in the way you're counting, even if you do count Roberts. I don't think it's fair to count Ginsburg in the HLS column, because although she did attend HLS, she transferred out to Columbia Law and graduated there. Otherwise, by the same argument, you could say that Princeton can claim JFK (because he did go there for a short time, but then transferred to Harvard), or that Yale can claim Dick Cheney (because Cheney did go there for a few semesters but left without a degree).

I think a more fair way is to see where the justices actually received their law degrees. Here is the count:

A. Kennedy - HLS
D. Souter - HLS
A. Scalia - HLS
S. Breyer- HLS
J. Roberts (if confirmed) - HLS
W. Rehnquist - Stanford Law
R.B. Ginsburg - Columbia Law
C. Thomas - Yale Law
J.P. Stevens - Northwestern Law

So it's really 5/9 for HLS.

Note, yes it is true, William Rehnquist did get a master's degree in government from Harvard. But that's not a degree from Harvard Law.

He also has a JD from Harvard. He did the JD/MBA.

I also found this guy who has a JD, MBA, and MD, all from Harvard, in addition to a bachelor's from Stanford and a master's degree from Cambridge. Some people enjoy school too much.

Ah, Republicans. They don't do your school well, Byerly. Hopefully your favorite school has some Democrats who graduated from there as well. I'll do anything to keep Romney out of the White House.
