So far so good for us. College fair was helpful but felt a bit hectic and rushed. Mostly our impressions of schools were confirmed. We were hoping we could shorten our list of possible schools but at this point we are at a net +1 (1 off the list but two added). Oh well! I do think my dd feels good that there seem to be a lot of programs out there that seem promising in terms of fit. Now if she can only get in AND the money comes! ?
My dh and dd are there. They said they got a lot of information at the fair. Like you, though, I don’t think it really changed the list much. DD said all the schools were helpful and easy to talk to except one. It was a long and tiring day, but I think they have found it valuable so far. They have a school tour scheduled at one of the schools on Monday and when they mentioned that to the rep at the fair they asked her if she wanted to take a class. So they are going to try to work that out.
My daughter did the whole thing alone- she’s all about independence. She felt one school in particular pretty rudely brushed her aside, but otherwise enjoyed talking to all of the reps. She didn’t feel the fair itself was long enough as she was rushed out at the end of her time without even being able to talk to every school that she wished to- she actually had to email her resume and headshot to one school prior to Sunday’s audition. Since there were other weird breaks in the programming, she felt the fair could’ve been longer for each group. I’m still unclear on what happens next, if anything really. Are the schools even required to say anything to you if you auditioned for them, or might she never hear anything at all?
We attended this weekend. It did feel rushed. However, I was exposed to schools that we never would have considered. I believe due to the kids being into dance, this is the world they live in for auditions. I felt it was so important for the experience for sure.
@milgymfam I went with my dd and even with us splitting up at the very end, we barely got all of her resumes distributed! I agree that the college fair is such an important part of the event and it really was too short. We also mostly had good experiences talking to reps with the exception of one rep who just seemed unprepared to sell the school and talk about the program.
One thing my dd found really useful was the peer-to-peer meeting in which they got to talk to students from the various programs. She actually added a school (Hofstra) to her list based on that, although it was after the college fair, so she didn’t actually get to talk to the college reps!
I will definitely be curious to see if we actually get admissions offers from the audition or if it’s more of a recruiting tool. And who knows what the time frame will be!! Meanwhile we’re just forging ahead with her other October auditions, the first of which is at a school that was at Dancewave!
@threegirlpileup that’s the thing- she didn’t schedule any auditions for schools on her list that were at Dancewave. We can’t afford to travel around much and she was under the impression it would be treated like an audition at the schools, so she never considered she would need to. I’m kinda worried about that now- more that she may never hear a peep from anyone. I hope the audition process wasn’t just something to sell attendance at Dancewave.
@milgymfam we have a couple of auditions planned so far at places that were auditioning at Dancewave as well. We haven’t done much in the way of visits, so we put those on the calendar figuring they could serve that purpose as well. One of them is a two-day open house and audition, so it seemed like a great way to get to know the program. I do wish there was more concrete info available about what can come out of the Dancewave auditions! My impression has been that some schools do admit and even offer scholarships, but other schools use it more as a recruiting tool to get dancers to come to their on-campus auditions.
I guess in that case I just wish they were forthright and didn’t call it an audition at all, or maybe denote the difference ahead of time. I guess my daughter will be missing a lot of opportunities at this point because I’m kinda tapped out on audition travel and had counted the the NY expense to cover a wide swath. We will know better for next year, should she not get in anywhere this year.
My daughter auditioned at Dancewave last year, and unless things have changed you will definitely hear back with (hopefully) acceptances! From Dancewave DD was accepted to many programs including some top ones on her list at that time (Point Park, Towson, Hofstra are a few I can think of). For her other top schools she got either a no, or a “please come to our school audition “ response. We did end up going back for Montclair, Purchase, and Rutgers Mason Gross. If I remember right the emails started coming in in about a week or so, so good luck to your daughters!
@MomL98 thank you for that info. A yes, no, or even maybe is great- I’m just so glad to hear that they do get responses in a reasonable time frame. I really appreciate you sharing your daughter’s experience.
D received an email asking to set up a Skype call from one of the schools this morning. Not what I was expecting tbh, and I don’t know what it signals. Eek!
My D was also at dancewave last weekend. And the waiting is already killing me… Glad to hear that some of you are already getting a response. If any one else gets a response please let us know!!
Fingers crossed! This is the only school she felt outright dismissed by at the fair, but maybe because she’d already applied they wanted to talk more to potential applicants? I hope maybe her impression was just wrong. If they have done that I will be sure to whine about it here. Ha.
My daughter was also at Dancewave this weekend and felt it was overall a very good experience- hoping to start hearing back soon from colleges as shes already sent in all her applications so we can start planning the auditions
Definitely let us know how the call go! I agree that surely it is a positive sign!
My dd said only school who gave concrete info on when you would be contacted is George Mason. Said if you don’t hear from them in 10 days you didn’t get accepted but if you would like to be looked at again to email them. She said a girl did get accepted last year after an initial no from Dancewave and is now a student there.
DD just got an email from one of the schools asking for her mailing address so they could send her some follow up information as a result of the audition. A good sign??
Was her mailing address not on her resume? Seems like any reaching out could be good. D got an email from another school inviting her to tour the campus and do a shadow day- she said why would they do that just to reject me, and saw it as a good sign. I saw it as more neutral, personally.
