Surface laptop VS Macbook

Hey y’all
I’m starting my nursing program soon and I’m wondering which one is the best laptop to get. I have one already but it’s a 15 inch and it’s heavy to carry all around. I have MacBook Air and surface laptop in mind. I’ve heard that MacBook doesn’t really support Microsoft word and all that stuff? Is this true? As well as Microsoft apps doesn’t run fast on MacBooks. I really want a MacBook but I’ve had mixed reviews between surface laptop and MacBooks. Any thoughts?

My son has a MacBook. I’m not techy but I know whenever he has to submit things in Word, he can just “export” and it converts it over. He had no problems freshman year.

Can you contact the school, or check their website? Ours didn’t recommend one over another, but if your major has certain requirements they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Don’t worry about Office on Macbooks. You can either purchase/install Office or download a free program (Libre Office, I believe) that lets you do all the Office stuff and, as @NJWrestlingmom said, save as an office format. In the end, just get whatever works for you with regard to price, function, and even aesthetics.

A MacBook, rather than a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro would be ideal for college. They have a 12 inch screen which is large enough and it is a Retina screen so very nice resolution and video quality which is much better than the MacBook Air. Also uses SSD for storage.

Microsoft makes Office for Mac so you can use most Microsoft applications natively on the Mac. A major exception is Microsoft Access but most college students are not using that nowadays.

The main limitation for the MacBook is connectivity. It has a headphone/earbud port and then only a USB-C port. I don’t think many college students need much additional cable connectivity. But if you do, you should buy a USB-C adapter hub. They cost about $60 and add several USB 3.0 ports, an SD slot, and others.

I use a MacBook for travel and it is excellent. Hard to go back to a MacBook Air once your eyes have enjoyed the Retina monitor.
