Surfing and Studying in the US?

I'm from New Zealand and am considering coming to the States next year to study, but i want to go somewhere warm and with good surf very close to college, where shall i go?? California? I heard these is some ok waves in Santa Barbara and San Diego, where else?? Florida? Thats where Kellys from so there must be waves there... Any Ideas?

Well, best surf would have to go with California, but the water here is pretty cold, so if you are into warm weather/water Florida seems like a better fit, although the waves aren't as nice :)

id take better waves over better weather any day..

so where in california would be best? san deigo, santa barbara, ucla..?

psh california waves look like little farts compared to hawaii's

u could go to uh?

if not then, i guess southern cali has better waves.

santa cruz's waves are okay-ish

yeah hawaii would be sweet but isn't the university of hawaii rubbish?

yeah.. it is not that great. I heard their med school was okay though. There is another college there, forgot its name.

Chaminade university is okay..

they need to fix their university systems..

still confused.. if you had to name one university with both good surf and good studies what would it be?

UCSD if you want both the criteria.

If not, UCSB

UCSC is in an area of good surf but it;s not the strongest school. USD, UCLA are probably best, then UCSD, then Pepperdine than UCSB.

UCSD, UCSC, SDSU... your best bet (for academics + surfing) would be UCSD.

UCSC/UCSD good school, good waves

for florida, anywhere on the atlantic coast is good. Florida Atlantic University's where I'm going (the honors college in jupiter) and everyone's walkin around with a surfboard under one arm :D great place to study too, only 400 kids and a low student-faculty ratio.

UNCW - Wilmington - http://community.webshots.com/album/4536854NhGTQEdrzh

Harsh Local Vibe though, good luck

There is actually really good cold water surfing off of Maine. My wave-slave California kid looked at several Maine colleges. Bates and Bowdoin were his top two choices. The best surf there is when the winter storms come in. You will definately need a dry suit

lisa

Florida = Bad surf for the most part

Sebastian Inlet is cool, but I don't know of any good schools around there. The best two breaks were also hard to surf for me. But I suck, so.

On the East Coast, your best bet is definitely a school by the coast in North Carolina. The only one I'm familiar with is UNC - Wilimington. The academics are decent, but subpar to flagship UNC - Chapel Hill (which is too far inlad for your tastes). Good waves generally, though, by East Coast standards. And I lovelovelove Cape Hatteras, which is a bit of a drive, but would make a nice weekend trip.

I agree that one of the UCs would be your best bet. I don't know where the best surf is in CA, though (beats me if Santa Barbara is better than San Diego or Santa Cruz or whatever...) - never been there. Academics at all the UCs are solid.
