Im an OOS NY’er who wants to get into surfing. How far is the beach from Muir? and how would i get there- school bussing? And if so would there be room for a surfboard. Or will i need to find someone who drives or attempt to bike there?

I heard it's a 5 minute walk from muir to the beach..i may be wrong

I'm also wondering about surfing at ucsd. For one thing if you've never surfed before you'll need to start out with a long board which would be difficult to store in a dorm room. Also from what I've seen the waves in SD are a little rough for beginners and would require a short board. I'm going to wait until I get there to figure out what to do with a surfboard.

i read somewhere that SI rated SD as the best surfing college

i wana learn to surf tooo

Yeah, ive actually been surfing for a little bit, i guess im still a beginner though. when i go i do use a longboard, 9'0 i think.

It is the best surfing college but not for beginners from what I understand. I have a 7'0 but I'm going to get a short board to practice this summer.

Which beach is closest to UCSD? Because i have been to La Jolla and have only surfed at The Shores, so those waves arent very intimidating. Though i dont think its very close to the campus

I'm pretty sure that is the closest

i used to surf down in san diego. san diego does have some good spots such as blacks, swamis, scripps, horseshoe, and imperial beach. these beaches are mostly for short boarding, but beaches near encinitas is mostly long board. the waves can range from 1 foot to overhead depending on the weather and season. for you hard-core tow-in surfers there is cortez banks which is several miles off the san diego coast and can range from 20 to 70 feet.
i was actually supposed to go to ucsd (it was my dream school) but my parents wont let me so good by surfing. if u have any other questions just ask.

there's a surfing club at ucsd--meaing there will be athletic guys and girls.
